DofE Gold and Omicron - Yes or No

MusicForASushiRestaurant · 07/07/2022 06:52

DD has Omicron and is due on her expedition in the next day or so.

She's been in bed for 3 days with little appetite although managed half an omlet last night.

If by some miracle her Lat Flow results shows negative, would it be wise that she goes ahead?

Opinions divided in our household.

Depends how she feels

coolbottlesummer · 07/07/2022 07:00

How does she feel. She will have little energy after not eating. Does she want to go?

cantthinkofanothergoodusername · 07/07/2022 07:01

DofE gold is gruelling. I'd be shocked if, after 3 days in bed, she has the energy for any long walk, let alone the gold DofE

If she’s been ill in bed and barely eating then I’d doubt she was in a fit enough state for her expedition.

Dont let the whole “we have to learn to live with Covid” cloud this - if she was in bed for 3 days with flu she wouldn’t be classed as fit enough, or noro virus.

The lateral flow is a red herring imo. She’s not going to manage the expedition on half an omelette.

rookiemere · 07/07/2022 07:06

If she is not feeling well, she shouldn't do it, it's not fair on her group if she goes ahead.

MaJoady · 07/07/2022 07:06

Echo pp about her feeling strong enough

Also consider how remote is her expedition? My gold was so remote that we only saw the leaders once in the 5 days and had to keep in touch via satellite phone because we were about a half day hike from the nearest road. If she needs help, how will she get it?

Are her group close? Will they look after her, or get frustrated at needing frequent breaks? There is a lot of ground to cover and stopping and starting repeatedly is mentally difficult for a group, particularly if the weather conditions are tough (raining, cold, windy, too hot)

CauliWobble · 07/07/2022 07:08

Absolutely not. Even if she feels better she needs to take her time getting back to "normal" levels of activity yet alone the D of E. Long covid doesn't seem to care how severe your initial covid was.

Holymole · 07/07/2022 07:08

Absolutely not. She will be too weak and will hold the rest of the group up.

MusicForASushiRestaurant · 07/07/2022 07:12

@MaJoady - all very good points, thank you!

I'm recovering from Omicron myself, so not thinking clearly - and still thinking in "practice expedition mode".

really depends how she feels. I felt awful for 3-4 days, but then actually picked up very quickly, started eating and walking and was OK then. So if she does start eating normally and feels like she can go outdoors to walk for an hour or two in the next day or so to see how it goes, then she might consider it - discuss with her group perhaps. I'd really hate to miss it if I were her, as it will be so hard to find another opportunity. But chances are her LFT won't be negative by then anwyay.

Recyclingbins · 07/07/2022 08:21

Depends on her recovery rate. I was ill in bed on the Tuesday & Wednesday with covid but ran an ultra marathon (60k) with no issues on the Sunday. Everyone is different.

VictAudio · 07/07/2022 08:25

No way! Her long term health could be seriously affected. Do not do this.

MusicForASushiRestaurant · 08/07/2022 11:48

Hi, thanks everyone for your advice.

I thought I would update.

Just to be clear - there is absolutely no way on earth that I would allow her to go ahead 🙄 and also her college would not allow this either, pretty much for reasons highlighted by others up thread.

My daughters health and wellbeing is my utmost top priority - but, you know teenagers, they can wish and hope and insist they know best and all that .... 😅.

However, it's a mute point - she's still lat flow positive and still feeling like poop on top of feeling utterly disappointed and deflated to be missing out after all the build up to the trip.

College has been lovely and said they will be in contact after the trip to let her know what options she has going forward - they've been reassuring to her that she does have options and it WILL all work out OK.

Hey there - I've just posted a new thread as my DD tested positive for Covid while on her practice gold expedition! Had to go pick her up!

Looking at other options now but her real expedition is end of August and we are struggling! She might just drop the whole thing.

MusicForASushiRestaurant · 19/07/2022 20:38

Oh no! Don't drop it - what options does school/college give you?

OP posts:
mizu · 19/07/2022 21:20

We've been given some other dates that other companies do - most of which are fully booked bar one she can't do date wise.

She could do it next year, that's an option but she's not too keen on that.

MusicForASushiRestaurant · 19/07/2022 22:13

As you've already paid, no harm in deferring a year and seeing how she feels then.

In the meantime chip away at the volunteering, physically snd skills sections so that they are done. Then, when next year comes all she needs to do us the expeditions
