Help me decide where to move please!

I’m going cross eyed searching Rightmove so I thought I’d ask the hive mind for some input.

I currently live in Cambridge and have lived in various other “naice” cities during my life (moved a few times because of my DH’s job). We really stretched ourselves to buy our current house, but are now having to look at selling because I’m no longer working (health issues) and the cost of living is taking us into the red every month.

We’ve decided to look at moving to another part of the country as DH can now work remotely, but just can’t work out where to go. We have c £450k and it’s us and our 3yo DS.

I’m going to sound like a total snob now (which is why I NC’d!) but having lived in some of the most beautiful, safe and desirable places in the country I have no idea where to look now that our budget is so much lower than it was (because of my being unable to contribute to the mortgage) York looks beautiful, but I’ve no idea which bits are ok. Ripon too. We adore Yorkshire but don’t know it that well.

The most important thing for us is that our son has all the opportunities he can so we want good schools where children are expected to do well.

Please suggest where we should look!

Can I add into your criteria that at some point on your retirement you might need a major hospital and it’s much nicer if you can get there easily rather than be an hour’s drive away…

On a similar note, think carefully about moving somewhere that's absolutely overwhelmed by tourists in summer. Ambulance and police are resourced to cover the year-round population, so if you have an emergency in the summer in (say) Cornwall, you can forget about an ambulance.

Sorry, wrong (but similar) thread!!

Sheffield! The southwest of Sheffield is brilliant, much of it is in the Peak District, it's an interesting and underrated city.

This is in a great area.

Also very close to an outstanding junior school, lots of nice independent shops and restaurants, very close to two massive parks and you can be in the Peak District in 10 minutes.

Do you want rural, small market town, suburb of a big city? Do you need transport links to anywhere in particular? Do you drive?
