Premier League Hospitality or Weekend Away?

DP has a big birthday coming up later this year (30). I have £350 saved and should be able to save more by his birthday. I thought I’d have a look at Hospitality tickets for a premier league match at the team he supports. I had no idea what the prices might be, I thought maybe starting from £80-£100 each so £200 for us both. Well they released the first matches this week (not for DP’s birthday weekend but it gave an idea). £314 for the cheapest! So over £600 for both of us! You get a three course meal, posh seats to watch the match, goodie bag of souvenirs, post match cheeseboard and a speech by a former player giving analysis on the match. But for £600 we could have a nice weekend away, in the U.K. or even got somewhere! It seems such a hideous amount of money for one event. But actually, would DP prefer a one off experience of hospitality at his team than a nice hotel and mooching around a city break (which I what I’d prefer!).
What would your DPs or DHs prefer, if they like football?

Personally - I would hate to do the hospitality for a football match, would hate to be sat watching the game unable to chant, and properly cheer the team on. But I am a season ticket holder and so attend games very regularly (Only missed one home all last season).

Does he go to games for his club regularly, or is this a one off opportunity for him? I think as a one off he would enjoy it, but if he goes regularly, I would go away somewhere for the weekend!

Can't beat hospitality, and you can still cheer and shout as loud as you like!
Both DH and I would choose that over a weekend away, however we both love the game, if only one of you does then it's a lot of money, that only one of you will really enjoy.
That does sound a good price for what you get though we pay over £1k at my club for that kind of experience. For that price we wouldn't even get food or drink included!

My Dh is a season ticket holder at his Prem club. He'd much prefer the weekend away (as long as he could watch the match on tv)😅

He doesn’t get to go regularly because he plays a team sport on Saturdays which clashes with matches, but he does follow the team, watch matches on TV, has been a lifelong supporter since he was a child etc. I do think he’d like the experience.
Also agree with PP who said it’s a lot of money for me to go with him who isn’t that into football (I don’t hate it or anything but wouldn’t be my choice for my birthday!) His Dad is also a big supporter of the club but I don’t think he’d be able to afford a hospitality ticket for himself and I don’t really want to spend £300 on one for him. At least if I go, I get the nice meal and to spend a child-free afternoon with my DP!
When I first saw the prices I was so shocked I was sure I’d change plan to a nice hotel with spa, nice city break etc but then I started thinking well that’s what I would like (and I know DP would happily come along and enjoy himself too) but as it’s his big birthday, should I be choosing the match instead.
How about getting normal tickets for the match (what are they like £50-70?) and also book a nice hotel in the city for that night and a meal afterwards. But is just normal match ticket “special” enough for a big birthday.

What about a tour of the stadium? And then make a weekend of it with a meal etc.

I don’t know that he’d be as interested in a tour of the stadium as he would seeing the actual match. I think he may have done a tour before as a teenager actually. He’s even played on the pitch in a charity tournament thing made up of local youth teams when he was a teen.

This sounds good. Like PP I think football hospitality can be a bit dead and full of
people on corporate freebies who aren’t interested in football. It’s also really expensive.

Price of the tickets very much depends on the team.

skippy67 · 06/07/2022 20:41

Depending on the team, it's pretty much impossible to get tickets unless you're a member or know someone who is.

For hospitality or normal tickets?

DS and I went to an Anfield match with hospitality and it was great. We booked through Sportsbreaks.com and had the hospitality pack plus a couple of nights in a hotel at the Albert Docks. There was a choice of four or five hotels. Maybe take a look on there?

I was going to say it's hard to get a one off ticket for some premier league team. Obvs hospitality ones are different but normal seats are usually all season ticket holders

Normal.

TheChosenTwo · 06/07/2022 21:04

If you’re going to spend the money on 2 tickets for it I think you should give the other ticket to his dad, what a special memory it will be for them both and how lovely of you to have thought of it etc etc. football bores me rigid though, absolutely no way I’d spend that money to put myself through the tedious experience that it would be for me, would definitely be palming that off onto someone else!

Hmm maybe that’s why some people get hospitality as a one off then. I was reading that tourists etc such as Americans who come over will get hospitality so that they’re guaranteed a ticket for the match, if it’s a one off as part of a trip to the U.K.

As I say, it wouldn’t be my first choice for my own birthday, but I wouldn’t be bored rigid. I have been to FA cup matches at this club (easier to get tickets to than premier league matches) and matches at the championship club my dad has a season ticket for. Plus I like spending time with my DP, and it’s something a bit different and special to do together. I really don’t know that I’d spend over £300 on his dad.

Ticket for the game with his dad, followed by family meal and night away with you?

CMOTDibbler · 06/07/2022 21:16

I asked my dh (big football fan but only gets to go to matches with corporate hospitality as it happens) and he says do the hospitality as its such a special experience, and it really will be a one off thing

You would go for the weekend away… but what would your soon-to-be-30 year old football fan DP/DH go for? 😁

I was thinking something like this but I’m learning that getting normal game tickets can be like hen’s teeth.

I would do the hospitality. It's special for him. Get a hotel too and make it a great weekend

BarbaraofSeville · 06/07/2022 21:46

For £600 you could probably get a mini break somewhere like Barcelona or Madrid and do a stadium tour as part of the trip.

As it happens, the match I was thinking of getting tickets for is on New Year’s Eve (as his birthday is in late December before Christmas). Now to get someone to have the kids overnight on NYE… 😁

I know, and this is what has me wavering. Although we’re both teachers so this affects when we can get away and the prices. He has done the Nou Camp tour before.
