Stick on wallpaper - rented flat

Hi all

If you have used stick on wallpaper in your rented home, did you ask your landlord?

I have seen a few threads about if your LL refuses redecoration, to just use stick on wallpaper.

I am tempted to do that as our flat looks really dull, and tired now but our LL has refused to redecorate or let us do it. I just wanted to change to white walls and perhaps stick on vinyl flooring. It's all meant to be temporary of course but as he's strict i'm guessing that will be a no too :( a part of me wants to go for it and just do it, but we have inspections once a year so don't want to annoy him

If you have used it, was it quite easy to remove? If you're a landlord would you have an issue with it? I know ultimately i'd need to ask the LL about this and if it's a no then it's a no.. just wanted to know your experience :)

I don't know about wallpaper, but I've used stick on flooring and it stuck fast, so you wouldn't be able to restore it to the original.

The pattern leaves shadows across the wall. I see it every now and then and it is really obvious and expensive to put right

Ah okay thank you for your replies! The wallpaper would be plain white so hopefully no patterns showing afterwards. Ive seen a few videos regarding the vinyl flooring (over carpet!) And they make it look so easy so im glad i asked here as i wouldnt want to leave marks etc or do any damage !

Whats on the walls now, would he let you paint them. If you put vinyl on top of the carpet will the doors shut ok and the carpet breathe and not go mouldy.

@BlanketsBanned that's a really good question actually. I didn't think about the carpet going mouldy or the doors closing. The stick on is supposed to be thin but then again ontop of carpet is a different story. I will do some more research into it.

The walls are magnolia right now. It would be great if he let us paint it white and then back to magnolia afterwards when we leave. He's said no to us already sadly so our only option is to ask him if we can use temporary flooring and paper. Hoping he will say yes

Look up the ‘wear and tear’ fair use guidelines.

www.mydeposits.co.uk/content-hub/fair-wear-and-tear-what-is-it-and-how-is-it-applied/

this seems to suggest that decor ‘should’ last 5 years- has it been longer than that?

seems reasonable to push hard for permission to decorate properly if it has- and the landlord would essentially run getting ‘betterment’.

Thank you for the link @AppleKatie that was a useful read. We do have 2 small children and due to that it's not looking it's best, even though we have tried hard.

It has been 4 years so I guess not too surprised the LL doesn't think it needs anything done yet. We have emailed LA asking them to ask LL about alternatives to redecorating seeing as he said no, fingers crossed he agrees to something atleast as it looks dull and depressing
