Stinky Birkenstocks

NoEffingWay · 05/07/2022 22:30

I have recently discovered Birkenstocks-and I pretty much wear them all day, every day. They are like walking on little clouds! The only trouble seems to be that they are developing a slight/horrible vinegary stench and I have no idea how to clean them.
I have hot, sweaty feet so this shouldn't be a surprise Grin

Mine too. I just try to spray them with freshener. The leather ones take longer to get smelly than the birko Flor ones, it it still happens.
I think you can get the cork replaced, but probably works out nearly as dear as buying a new pair. X

I bought them as my feet sweated excessively. Wearing my ballet style crocs it felt like I was walking in a puddle after 5 mins.
After all of last summer and a good 2 months so far this year I can still hold them to my nose and barely a whiff. Have I been lucky or are you unlucky? Have you got the leather and Cork version? Or the synthetic version?

I had this problem with many pairs of Birkenstocks over the years, it was such a shame as I loved them. I swapped to the Moshulu version a few years ago and haven't had that problem since. I guess Birkenstocks just don't agree with some feet!

Make a paste with bio carb and water with a squeeze of dishwashing liquid and scrub with a old toothbrush. Then clean with a damp cloth and then wipe with a drug cloth and leave to dry for 24 hours. It should help

NoEffingWay · 05/07/2022 23:04

They are the leather and cork ones. Usually I would have a few pairs of sandals to swap between but I injured my ankle and the birks were the only shoes that didn't hurt and gave some support so they have had heavy usage!

I will try the toothbrush cleaning idea and see if that helps. Blush

Yes! Bicarb paste and a good scrub works wonders!

iknowthismuchis · 05/07/2022 23:09

Maybe not the best idea but I just put my (not Birkenstock, cheap Asda copies) in the washing machine and they were fine

Itwasntmeright · 05/07/2022 23:11

mine honk as well, although I have had them for years. I’ll try the bicarb and toothbrush method

user1471530109 · 05/07/2022 23:14

I have put my birkies in the washing machine. They came out nice and fresh.

But the smell came back! I'm gutted. Will try the bicarb paste, thank you.

TotalRhubarb · 05/07/2022 23:15

I go at mine with a toothbrush and tea tree oil shower gel, let them dry and they're completely stink-free (other than a faint whiff of tea tree oil) afterwards.

Loocheeyar · 05/07/2022 23:22

Odaban powder in them , odaban spray and pitrok spray on your feet

absolutely industrial

picklemewalnuts · 06/07/2022 07:50

My mum considers the smooth pattern of the foot on the sandal to be dirt, and scrubs it off regularly.

I consider it to be part of the wearing in, and love that the smooth wear pattern makes the shoe unique to the wearer!

Are you lot scrubbers or smoothies?

NoEffingWay · 06/07/2022 08:04

I'm a smoother who wishes I was a scrubber! The toe marks in these ones appeared almost immediately, the looked new for about a week.

I can't replace them every three months so I had accepted my sweaty foot marks but today is the day I whip out the baking supplies and old dentistry equipment and go to town!

Following this with interest - I have the same problem. I tried the bicarb/bio washing powder scrub and it didn't work very well unfortunately 😩

I think I will give tea tree oil shower gel a go!
