Dry July sponsorship - except they can drink?

This isn’t a huge deal really and not AIBU so, y’know, don’t come for me.

But an (overseas) colleague has asked everyone to sponsor her for dry July, for many reasons but mostly her relationship with alcohol is a bit rocky and she’s doing this as a challenge for a cancer charity. Worthwhile etc. I’ve chucked her 20 quid.

Except you can actually then buy participants “golden tickets” so that they can still have a drink on a specific night that they want. Colleague has now asked everyone again to responsor her to allow her to have a few nights off to have a drink. She’s using one of these golden tickets tonight already so has only done 4 days so far.

I can’t really decide if this is on or not. On one hand, it’s more money raised for charity so that’s good. But on the other hand, lots of people are sponsoring her to abstain from drink for the month, so isn’t it a bit of a mockery to then ask for even more money to allow someone to have a drink?!

Not sure if I’m missing something, would you be mildly irritated about this as I am?

That's fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, I agree with you that it defeats the purpose somewhat. But then again I hate sponsorship in general.

Not a challenge then is it its more a I kinda feel like doing this but I dont want to do all of it.

I wouldn't sponsor anyone to be sober (let alone someone with a drink problem) but this is beyond ludicrous.

There are a million different ways to donate to a charity. This is not one of them.

AllFreeOwls · 05/07/2022 20:49

I'd find this ridiculous (and your colleagues has some cheek!)

I agree with you but this was sent to everyone at work and it’s really obvious who has and hasn’t donated so just to keep the peace I gave a token amount

But in general yes, I hate sponsorship and think there are better ways of supporting charities
