Posting here for traffic. My ds has asked for a kindle for his bday, just turned 9. He likes the usual stuff for his age. What’s the difference between the versions of each?

Op, I've only just seen your question as I was searching for threads re Kobo e-readers.

My ancient kindle is slowly dying and after research I've decided that my next e-reader will be a Kobo, specifically Kobo Libra 2. The reason for getting a Kobo is that you can borrow e-books from your local U.K. library using OverDrive which is an app already programmed into Kobos. You just go into the app choose your local library, enter your library membership no. And PIN and borrow books which are then downloaded to your Kobo. There are no late borrowing fees as the books are automatically removed when the lending period is up.

You can also buy books from the Kobo store or any other e-publisher, but not from Amazon.

My old kindle paperwhite has been great and the latest Kindle Paperwhite has got great reviews, but Amazon's own e-readers won't let you borrow books from the U.K. library system and you can only buy e-books from Amazon, nowhere else.

I want to be able to borrow books as well as buy them and for that reason I'm choosing a Kobo for my next e-reader. The Kobo Clara might suit your son.

However, if you are not bothered about borrowing ebooks from the library and will buy books for your son, then the latest Kindle paperwhite would be a good buy as the e-ink in the paperwhite models is the closest thing to real print and is much easier on the eyes than tablets and laptops. There is also an Amazon Kindle Kids model but this doesn't have the e-ink.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Thank you for the info above, we went ahead and bought the kobo - I logged into overdrive but either the library system has hardly any e-books my son wants to read or we are doing something wrong as everything comes back with 0 result, even searching for Rowling books.

i think I will return it and go for the kids kindle edition, at least he will have access to lots of books for a year at least.

Libraries have limited copies of books to lend as ebooks so keep trying.

The ebooks would still show on the webpage, but wouldn't be available to borrow.

Please check your library's actual website. They might not use Overdrive (eg my library uses Borrowbox).

Hi OP, I found this while searching for the same answer, my DD is 9 soon and I wanted to get her an e-reader. I have the cheapest kindle, which has a built in light, and I've never really seen how the paperwhite is worth the extra expense. So was initially planning on getting the same for my DD.

But recently I've been having a lot of issues with Amazon, deliveries rarely showing up, not being able to get much on short delivery, prices always being more expensive than other retailers, them charging me for subscriptions I didn't sign up to and then making it extremely laborious to cancel them etc and I've decided to withdraw from Amazon as a loyal customer, I don't want to be tied into Amazon for e-books forever. Some of the books my DD likes are only on Kobo and not Kindle too, and anything not on there can be found online as a PDF.

Also I hated the free kids content deal on the fire tablets, I found it overwhelmed my children with choice, and the book content isn't that good on there, so the draw of the free kids unlimited content isn't for me either. We have recently taken to going to the library regularly, and upon learning that Kobo is the only way to borrow e-books I decided to go down that route.

Not all libraries still use Overdrive, so it might be that yours has changed to Borrowbox. You can check what service they use on your council's website. Mine uses both Overdrive and Borrowbox.

I've gone for the Kobo Libra 2 for my DD, which is more than I wanted to spend, but it was the cheapest one that had USB-C, and that was important to me. Plus it can be held landscape, and you can use buttons to page turn as well as swipe. I thought this important as my kindle is swipe only and often it mis-reads swipes and can be frustrating to access settings because of this. I want the reading experience to be as simple as possible so as not to put my daughter off. It also has the blue light filter.
