Holiday abroad - what to get for 8yo dd?

charliewww · 05/07/2022 14:34

I wasn't sure where to post this!

I'm taking 8yo dd on her first holiday abroad for a week in the summer. We are going to Greece all inclusive with a swim up room, and it's right on the beach. We won't be doing much, just relaxing for the week.

It might be a stupid question but what do I need to pack for her? Obviously the usual clothes, swimming costume, sun cream etc. but is there anything I wouldn't necessarily think of? I'm going to buy her a towel poncho and some sliders for around the pool.

Greece is not a developing country....

Clearly you haven’t been recently

Hugasauras · 05/07/2022 15:39

Since when is Greece a developing country? Confused Reins for an 8yo?! Some bonkers stuff on this thread Grin

I don’t understand the backlash this comment is getting. OP asked for suggestions and got one. Reigns may not be for everyone but they certainly have their uses, especially in these developing countries.

The fact you've referred to a developing country cements my view that you can't be serious.

charliewww · 05/07/2022 15:42

Christ if I tried to out reins on my 8yo she would think I was absolutely insane Grin She's very mature for her age too!

Thanks for all of the suggestions, they are all great. I am going to take inflatables with us as it's a very small resort (middle of nowhere with only a small village next to it) and apparently the ones in the shop are 70 euros!!

We have lots of little games etc from camping weekends so will definitely take some. Her favourite snacks is a good call too as we will arrive late and she can be a bit fussy sometimes.

Because its honestly not a rational suggestion for use on a neuro typical 8 year old who will be supervised on a 1.2.1 ratio by her own mother.

Greece isn't a developing country.

Florin · 05/07/2022 15:45

An 8 year old in reins😂I have really heard it all now this is the most ridiculous suggestion I have ever seen on Mumsnet. You would struggle to get a 4 year old in reins an 8 year old no way and where would you buy them? It has given me a good chuckle though. Oh and I have a child with adhd who is prone to wandering off still never used reins at any age. From 8 when we go to busy areas he wears a running belt with mobile phone in it. Contract costs us £4.50 a month and also means if you get stuck anywhere they have something to play on.

We always take magazines to read and for the pool you can get a selection of pool tools on Amazon some that sink some that shoot through the water etc. they were invaluable on our recent trip away. Even had some big fake diamonds for us to hide in the bottom of the pool and for them to spend ages finding them. I would take one outfit that is light and lose but long sleeved which is perfect for when they want a break from the sun without feeling hot. Decent sun cream you know their skin is ok with and the same for bug spray. Lots of insulated water bottles too. Have a fun trip!

Ylvamoon · 05/07/2022 15:47

Get her one or 2 smart outfits... I know you have booked AI but my DD always loved dressing up for dinner & evening entertainment.

Yodaisawally · 05/07/2022 15:48

I'd loved to have seen my 8yos reaction to reins at that age, FML.

Uno
less clothes than you think you need
An extension cable if you both have devices that need to be charged ipad or whatever, with usb slots or plugs
Pool toys
Waterproof beach bag she can keep her own toot in

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 05/07/2022 15:48

I can't believe two posters are saying putting reins on an 8 year old is acceptable, it's really OTT 😳

kimfox · 05/07/2022 15:52

Reins?! WTAF?! Buy a very brightly coloured T-shirt for spotting easily and hold her hand in a busy place. Cap / sun hat & shades. Mosquito bite cream / and or repellant.

Clearly you haven’t been recently

This is offensive.

You are using "developing countries" as a pejorative and then you're doubling down and suggesting that a country with economic issues is therefore a "developing" country, ergo bad.

Just to be clear

  1. a developing country does not make it bad

  2. A country with significant economic problems does not mean its a "developing" country.

kimfox · 05/07/2022 15:54

Also calpol - so you don't have to find a pharmacy if it's needed.

ImWithSuperman · 05/07/2022 15:56

I can be a little overprotective and have to keep that side of me in check, but reins for an 8 year old, can you imagine? 😂

Hoppinggreen · 05/07/2022 15:58

PoshSpice2 · 05/07/2022 14:53

Maybe I’m overly protective. But these holiday resort towns get very very busy and there’s a lot of children and so can be a target for kidnapping. I don’t like to risk it but it’s down to personal choice x

You seriously put reins on your 8 year old ??

Crocky · 05/07/2022 16:00

Just a thought, make sure she is ok with the sunscreen you have before you go. I’m allergic to a lot of them.

takeitandleaveit · 05/07/2022 16:05

Greece is a 'developing' country? They were producing marble frescoes while we were still living in mud huts.

Homegettinginvaded · 05/07/2022 16:08

@PoshSpice2 …Harness and Reins for 8;year old 😂
I always took lots of small toys/ games ,felt tips ,colouring etc for my children to spend time out of the sun .
I pad / tablet charger .

YodaBabe · 05/07/2022 16:16

Less clothes than you think but comfy clothes.
Pool toys, the type that sink so she can dive to get them
Google's - good ones so you don't spend your time forever making sure they fit

notangelinajolie · 05/07/2022 16:27

A pack of cards
Goggles so she can see under the water
I'd also be getting a lilo for myself. Nothing better on a hot day than relaxing on a lilo in the pool 😎Not when DD is diving and splashing about though..

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/07/2022 16:27

I have and still don't get your point.

Yes she is allergic too! We have to buy the expensive Vichy stuff as it's the only one she doesn't react to. What do you use?

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 05/07/2022 16:44

I would take
7 dresses for evenings
9 knickers
2/3 sets of shorts and t shirts
cardigan or hoodie
hats/UV hats
3 UV suits (john lewis do big sizes)
handbag/jewellery
Pjs
sun glasses
googles

medicine, paracetamol/iburofen, insect bite stuff, plasters, rehydration sachet,
anti mostiquo bracelet
toiletries
sun cream

magazine, books, toys, family games

charliewww · 05/07/2022 16:44

Thanks again everyone. I'll definitely get her own beach bag as she'll love putting her stuff in her own bag. Extension lead is genius!

My DH will be there too so there's a 2:1 ratio on keeping an eye on her, don't worry Wink

This is a great list thank you. I wasn't sure how much clothes I actually need to pack. I need to buy her some summer bits and realised some of the shops are getting autumn clothes in now!
