Doing some work for a friend - would you ask for petrol money?

Have arranged to do an hours work for a friend - making up a very small buffet and delivering to a venue for him whilst he's on holiday.

He has said he will pay be for the hours work. Should I ask for petrol money as well as that's not been mentioned!!!!

It's a 6 mile round trip so not far but still using my car

It depends. Are you driving for 10 minutes or hours?

Socksies193 · 05/07/2022 11:11

Yes, I'd put the price of fuel onto your hourly rate.

BIWI · 05/07/2022 11:11

Just increase your hourly rate to reflect how much fuel you will have used

shiningstar2 · 05/07/2022 11:14

If it's for a friend and he is paying you I don't think I would be mentioning a 6 mile round trip. Of course that depends what he is paying and how strapped for cash you are. If he is paying more or less the going rate I wouldn't add on the petrol. If it's mates rates and you feel you need it I would just include that in your price but not make a separate issue of it.

Yodaisawally · 05/07/2022 11:17

For 6 miles I wouldn't be charging petrol money - is it really worth it for 45p / mile?

HeddaGarbled · 05/07/2022 11:18

Not for 6 miles, no.

DinasCopUniform · 05/07/2022 11:20

I think charging a mate for a 6 mile trip is a bit tight tbh. Especially as he's already paying you for a service.

Flavabobble · 05/07/2022 11:22

Depends what he's paying as an hourly rate. If he's charging someone £150 for a buffet you're making and delivering and paying you £9.50, I'd be adding petrol money. If it's a more substantial amount I wouldn't.

Fushiadreams · 05/07/2022 11:37

I think sure if you need the money that bad, it averages at less than twenty pence a mile so if you want to ask him for a pound go for it.

KupoNutCoffee · 05/07/2022 12:27

I'm impressed you're making and delivering a buffet in an hour.

As the job includes the making and delivery, I'd expect it to be one payment - including your petrol cost in the same way the buffet costs both the ingredients and the time.

If the delivery is a bit of a side note - in that you've agreed to make the buffet for one price, and they've gone 'oh can you deliver it to x?', then it would be fair to ask for the petrol.

But personally would depend on how much you're already getting - if it's costing you 50 but you're getting 100, I'd absorb the fiver petrol. If its costing 50 and you're getting 50, then I'd ask.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/07/2022 12:37

How much are you being paid for the hours work?

custardbear · 05/07/2022 12:44

Depends on how much you're charging. But max it's £3-4 which is a very small amount

Lindy2 · 05/07/2022 12:52

What's your hourly charge?

Is 1 hour enough for the work you're doing?

Is this your normal line of business or are you doing this just as a friend for a bit of cash?

1 hour for preparing and delivering a buffet sounds very little time to be honest.

I assume your friend is covering the cost of ingredients. Have you had to shop for them too?

I'd be honest and say to him that it's actually taken longer than the hour with shopping (assumed), preparation and delivery. Would £x amount be OK with him to properly cover the work involved.

If he's a good friend and you're not overly pushing up what you're charging, then I'd think it would be fine.

Professionally catered buffets cost a lot more than a 1 hour fee.

Loveisnotloving · 05/07/2022 13:10

Please don't make an absolute SHOW of yourself and ask for petrol money for 6 miles.

MrsMontyD · 05/07/2022 13:44

How are you making and delivering a buffet in an hour? At least 30 minutes will be driving, parking, unloading etc.

Is everything being delivered to you? If you're shopping or collecting anything your time to do that needs to be included.

takeitandleaveit · 05/07/2022 13:48

How much has he agreed to pay you for that hour's work?

OompaLoompaa · 05/07/2022 13:50

Make sure you charge for buying, making, delivering the buffet. I wouldn’t mention petrol.

This! I'm feeling secondhand embarrassment for the OP even thinking about it!

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 05/07/2022 14:08

depends what hourly rate is??

Yankydoodledandy · 05/07/2022 22:44

Paying me £8

OP posts:
Dic · 05/07/2022 22:50

That's not enough

NoSquirrels · 05/07/2022 22:50

£8 TOTAL?
I’d refuse that.

Givemeallthegin8 · 05/07/2022 23:04

What does the 8 pounds include?!!!

TokyoSushi · 05/07/2022 23:07

You're getting paid EIGHT POUNDS to make a buffet (which is only taking an hour?) - that's scandalous!!
