Yes, that's why horses stopped wearing hiking boots.

They were no use whatsoever and it was damn difficult to do up the laces with hooves.

Feelingsillyandgiddy · 04/07/2022 21:14

I once touched my own high power electric fence with a mental rag fork (accidentally!) I had heavy duty boots on and it almost blew my arm off!

giftswap2021 · 04/07/2022 21:15

Apparently if you grab it really tightly it doesn't shock you as bad, you'll still feel a shock but not as "jump-out-of -your-skin" feeling.

I have no intention of touching one!

It doesn't hurt ... it's more the shock (pardon the pun!)

sleighbellsjiggling · 04/07/2022 21:17

Maybe not if you wear them on your hands 🤔

whyohehy · 04/07/2022 21:18

You will know if you've touched an electric fence wellies or not. I speak from experience!

Why would that make a difference?

Sure you're not confusing them with nettles?

The image of a huge clysdale trying to lace up a pair of boots made me laugh

whojamaflip · 04/07/2022 21:22

Yes you'll get a shock but you could always try holding someone's hand and touching it - the other person will get the shock not you!

motogirl · 04/07/2022 21:24

A bit, it's not strong. Seeing my dog touch one is hilarious, he keeps touching it over and over

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/07/2022 21:27

I walked into once wearing my Army boots. It hurt less than the barbed wire fence (which I still have the scars from)

Tootsey11 · 04/07/2022 21:29

As someone who grew up on a farm and put up many an electric fence, the answer is no. If you touch it with only your hiking boots, ie the sole, you won't feel a thing through the rubber soles. As a child I would hold onto the electric fence tightly in my hand, and would only feel the lightest pulse because of the firm grip. But touch it lightly with a hand or arm and you will feel it. Through walking boots or wellies, no no no.

Tootsey11 · 04/07/2022 21:30

@giftswap2021 spot on.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 04/07/2022 21:31

Is that how birdies perch on overhead powerlines? Standing on one leg?

it’s surprisingly complicated - Link

giftswap2021 · 04/07/2022 21:38

@ErrolTheDragon

Yes both nettles and electric fences the same. Grab them tightly!

takeitandleaveit · 04/07/2022 21:40

Is it just me who wants to know why the OP is asking?

PerrinAybara · 04/07/2022 21:42

Yes. Also speaking from experience.

Mind boggling! They're being "charged" whilst they perch on them and it's only ever the little ones that you see doing it because they can get away with it!

It's no good to me though, I'm afraid, but thank you for the link. I'm going back to imagining they're perched on one leg and that - at some stage in a chicks life - their mum has to have "the chat" with them about powerlines and how to do it safely nods sagely

Eyesopenwideawake · 04/07/2022 21:57

Yes. And if you accidentally touch one while holding a horse he will also get a shock and may well be pissed off enough to kick you for being a twat. I speak from experience.

Sows push their piglets into them to check if they are switched on.If they aren't it's time to dig a big hole underneath and escape

abblie · 04/07/2022 22:18

Why would you even yoych a fence if you knew it was electric 😳
