AIBU to think mumsnetters are well off?

I have thought this for a while but after reading a thread about outfit suggestions for a dinner out, I think I’m right. Most of the suggestions were over £100 for one outfit and this doesn’t include shoes and accessories.
If I am going out I would be looking on Shein or going to Primark. I am not on a particularly tight budget but to spend that much on an outfit to go out to dinner is so not something I would ever consider.
Also the mumsnet swears by email that comes out promotes clothing that I can’t afford. All of my friends shop Primark and Shein. If I go into Next for example I usually walk straight back out again because for the price of one top I can buy a whole outfit on Shein. I’m not judging. I just thought there would be a varied offering of all price ranges not just expensive.

Some Mumsnetters are well off, others are much worse off. This is what you'd expect from a site with millions of users.

Inthefirepit · 04/07/2022 19:39

I buy everything off Vinted 😊 Bleedin love it! We also go carbooting on sundays. We’re not poor, but working class and content.

PinkButtercups · 04/07/2022 19:45

You can't see who is behind it. Most of the posters probably pretend.

I'm not well off but I'm doing ok. I avoid SHEIN and Primark for ethical reasons. If a dress costs £5 in the shop I worry about how little the person making it was paid.

Yodaisawally · 04/07/2022 19:53

It's a site with what millions of users, there are going to be all sorts.

I don't like the 'most people lie' line. I don't divulge the ins and outs of my finances but personally wouldn't touch Shein with a barge pole, and primark is ethically dodgy.

No judging if that's what you can afford but don't judge me for buying what I can afford.

CandyLeBonBon · 04/07/2022 19:54

I'm on tax credits and earn less than the national average.

IfIhearmumagaintoday · 04/07/2022 19:57

How old are you OP? The depends where you shop. Seeing is a risk and tbh the clothes I ordered were see through. I think seeing is OK for holiday.

I like primark but a going alfit? It's not my first choice of shop for the whole alfit anyway.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/07/2022 19:57

No one I know would buy a new outfit just for a dinner. Wedding guest - yes. Funeral and you don't own anything suitable - yes.

Just a dinner? No.

The fewer clothes you buy, the further your budget goes (so you can spend it more ethically). Especially if buying second hand.

IfIhearmumagaintoday · 04/07/2022 19:58

Shein*

This is flawed logic, lots of high end retailers pay the workers the same amount as Primark. Next and John Lewis is rated the same as Primark and better than Joules on Good On You

In answer to OP question - yes, I would say most Mumsnetters enjoy above average income. That's quite well known, whereas Netmums is comparatively less wealthy. View Mumsnet as M&S/Waitrose and Netmums as Iceland/Aldi. There is a bit of Tescos in-between. It's clear from most of the replies on the threads. and just, you know, what everyone says about Mumsnet. But, to be fair, I think there is a diversity of household wealth as well. Lots of people with money worries on credit crunch threads and lots of wealthy responders on the "How rich are you?" type threads. Actually, maybe it's just thread dependant. I really like Mumsnet, particularly when lots of outraged mums pile in on a post like "is this dress appropriate for a wedding". No-one believes in holding back!!!

deedledeedledum · 04/07/2022 20:09

I have had the complete opposite thought. I thought MN was predominantly middle class but from what I see, it seems very much lower middle to working class and pretty hard up on the whole. Everyone seems to spout hate at anyone with money

IncompleteSenten · 04/07/2022 20:11

Yes, some are. Some are mega rich. Most are not.

There's loads of threads where people say how much they're struggling and how scared they are.

Fuck sake, wrong thread obviously 😭

IncompleteSenten · 04/07/2022 20:14

Also, if you post anything about having stuff you get accused of stealth boasting and if you post about having no money, people think you're hinting for cash so I think most people don't really talk about their situation much.

supergreenuk · 04/07/2022 20:15

Shein can be a risk but I rely heavily on the reviews.
I am tall so find it hard to shop for my height. Long tall sally is completely over priced and Shein have a tall range much like Boohoo etc.
I can't say I ever think about the ethical side which makes me look super shallow but it stems from finding out a trusted (pricy) brand was unethical, made me question if you can ever really know. However Primark have signed the bangladesh accord.

I am 48. I think I have a young taste in clothes though. No jokes about mutton dressed as lamb please. I have a pre teen daughter which might help and my friendship group are all younger than me.

Good to know there are people who wouldn't/couldn't shop that pricy. I guess my question would be, why are the lower incomes not represented very well on that thread?

Poor baby! Lots of nappy-free time, frequent nappy changes and put on a nice bit of Metanium or Bepanthen after changes. If lots of little red dots might need a bit of CanestenH.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 04/07/2022 20:26

Shein is horrific to support. Why do you think their clothes are so cheap?

MarshaBradyo · 04/07/2022 20:28

Lately there seems to be a shift to threads re lower and income but probably to be expected with cost of living crisis in the media a lot

Otherwise quite a broad range

Caspianberg · 04/07/2022 20:28

I would buy a dress for £100, but not for just a dinner out. Virtually all my wardrobe is 10-15 years old. So if I buy a dress today, I expect to still be wearing it on a regular basis in 15+ years.
It’s very very rare I would buy a whole outfit for an occasion. Even for my own wedding I Will wear some items I already own

ShirleyPhallus · 04/07/2022 20:30

I disagree, I think on most threads where people are talking about spending any decent sum of money on something then people pour on to say “oh I could never spend more than £10 on a bag, I use a Tesco carrier and even then I think myself posh that it isn’t Poundland”

Bearsan · 04/07/2022 20:35

I'd rather buy a decent brand than Primark even if it means buying second hand. Nearly all my posh dresses are from charity shops, you can get designer ones that are really well made, better fit and barely worn or even new with tags on because mostly they are bought for one or two occasions.

JimTheShit · 04/07/2022 20:38

I disagree. I feel like I get quite a lot of insight into what it’s like to be less than well off by reading mumsnet.
