Help! I have forgotten how to read a novel. As a child and teenager I was an avid reader, often staying awake into the night as I was so absorbed in a book.
I loved reading. I could read anything start to finish even if it wasn't a great book.

In the last seven years I haven't read a book. I have tried numerous times but I don't have the staying power. I might manage the first few chapters and then it drifts. Books I've started and failed in the last two years:

Rivers of London
Where the Crawdads sing
Us

I hate that I don't read any more and I want to get back into it.

So here's the challenge. If there's one book that will grip me from the outset and inspire me to read it is...

River of Destiny or Whispers in the Sand by Barbara Erskine.

I also like books set in areas where I have been or plan to go, at the moment I am reading books set in Cornwall.

Shantaram, Where the Crawdads Sing, The Midnight Library are 3 I've devoured recently. Like you I lost my way with reading and it's lovely to have it back!

Also, try maybe the Salt Path by Raymond Winn or Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

I've enjoyed lots mentioned on here including Crawdads and American Dirt.

Midnight Library was the first one in a while that I read practically in one sitting. Very easy, not long and really interesting.

Other ideas are:
All The Heart's Invisible Furies
All The Light We Cannot See
Seven Death of Evelyn Hardcastle

I totally lost my reading mojo for a long time after I had DS2 - and I am a secondary English teacher! The book that got me back was Hamnet. It isn’t light but it is beautiful.

Recently read a book by jo Spain called The Last To Disappear- a thriller set in Scandinavia. If you haven’t read popular thrillers such as Gone Girl, Girl on a train or the breakdown- I’d say go for them. The books you left in the last few years are all the ones that are lauded to high heaven but they’re marmite reads-you love them or push on through! I’d say your love lies in a different genre, or maybe an e reader would help! Best of luck op!!
