13p a mile in fuel to run my car - do you know what yours cost (it's a simple calculation)

Diesel is £2 a litre, Luckily my car is economical - 67 mpg.

If you want to convert to pence per mile - then take the cost of fuel (in pence), multiply it by 4.54 and divide by your cars mpg.

(200 *4.54 / 67)

(Obviously mpg can vary when in towns vs long drives )

30 mpg @£2 a litre is 30p
60 mpg @2 a litre is 15p

You can see how journeys can add up - and how some people who have to drive for work are struggling.

30p ish, excellent value compared to pushing the car a mile by hand I think. Also so cheap it makes the extra time that would be spent cycling seem a massive waste.

There's some good MPG cars here

I assume mpg means miles to the gallon, but how do you find out how many your car does?

About 31p per mile, cost me £132 to fill up from empty the other day and I usually get around 420 out of a tank. God I wish I could have an economical car but working with horses and regular off road stuff plus towing means only a 4x4 will do 🤦‍♂️

SingingSands · 03/07/2022 21:28

Thank you @cakeorwine
Mine probably isn't great, being a thirteen year old diesel but it will be good to work it out. I'm currently cycling 5 miles each way for work 3 times a week as I know that helps and I'm sickened at the cost of a return train ticket for a six minute journey. Will be a different story in the cold and wet winter months though!

AlohaMolly · 03/07/2022 21:29

its an 02 plate Ford Focus. Really lovely little car, only had 15k miles on it when I bought it 18 months ago, and I can’t afford another anyway, but I wish I hadn’t clicked on your thread now 😁I won’t be able to stop calculating it!

Whattodo121 · 03/07/2022 21:31

Mine is around 20p a mile I think. I do a 24 mile round trip to work every day so it’s costing about a fiver a day. Couldn’t get there by public transport so it is what it is!

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 03/07/2022 21:32

I’m too stupid to work mine out but I do about 300 miles per week at the mo just to do the school run and it costs £74 in petrol. Thankfully I’m still working from home because if I was going into the office too (opposite direction) I just wouldn’t be able to afford it. Thankfully both children will be getting the bus by the time my office reopens so I’ll be paying £120 per month for 1 bus, the other bus is free and I’ll just have my office commute at about 100 miles a week 😰

I meant to add, I know through work that lots of essential car users, social workers and home caters etc are starting to struggle with the cost of fuel. It’s a real problem already.

Mariposa80 · 03/07/2022 21:44

I wouldn't necessarily trust the stated mpg the car gives. I've had cars before where it's miles off. I work it out by filling the car up and making a note of the mileage. Next time I fill up I note the mileage again and how much it takes me to get back to full.

It's working out about 13p a mile at the moment (hybrid). This car is much more consistent I seem to get similar mileage out of a tank of fuel whether I'm doing long or local journeys. My previous car would vary a lot. I could do 400 miles on a tank if lots of motorway driving, only around 340 if stop start round town driving

MuchTooTired · 03/07/2022 21:46

Mine’s apparently 42p a mile 😳

Liebig · 03/07/2022 21:52

Typically between 16 and 15p given I can get over 60 MPG with careful dual carriageway/motorway driving.

2011 Ford Fiesta, 1.4 L petrol. Average MPG from the manufacturer is around 48 MPG non-urban.

Fill car to brim. Reset mileage counter or note the overall mileage on the odometer. Drive till empty.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 04/07/2022 08:50

Mine is 14p (self charging hybrid, unleaded at 188.9 yesterday). I drive about 350 miles a week and virtually all of those are journeys of at least 10 miles. Still cheaper than public transport but getting closer.

AnotherDelphinium · 04/07/2022 08:58

Mine is 1.3p a mile, and yes, electric car.

I got a Nissan Leaf last year and absolutely love it. My electric will go up a bit in September, and then I think I’ll be looking at about 2.1p a mile.

Shade17 · 04/07/2022 09:00

I’ve been tracking MPG and costs forever, it’s really basic stuff. My least economical car costs £1.36 per mile round town at current fuel prices.

PattyMelt · 04/07/2022 09:00

boydy99 · 03/07/2022 20:58

Ours must be around 30p per mile 😱 3l diesel estate, but luckily we don't do a lot of mileage. DH cycles to work and I wfh although I'm on mat leave at the moment, so we have almost no commuting costs, just general running around locally.

Not doable for me, not as young as I was. The roads are pretty dangerous and doing a a12 hour shift in a sweaty uniform isn't pleasant. My legs would never carry me home again
I walked there once when I left my car in work and one to get it long story and It took over an hour as the main route has no pavements fast road, so you walk through the houses and up and down hills.

Sorry that reply was supposed to be to RampantIvy. I quoted the wrong person there.

Fair enough @PattyMelt

Once we get electric cars, good charging and cheap, reliable electricity, then hopefully cost per mile won't be too bad.

Mines approximately 25p a mile, I’m a district nurse in a rural area and Im currently doing 200 miles a week 😫 I’m putting £70 in every 3-4 days, totally unsustainable

lljkk · 04/07/2022 19:51

14.7p on fuel alone. Petrol. I guess that means the real running costs (to move it from A to B, not including depreciation or fixed costs like VED) is about 35p/mile. I've had 30p/mile in my head for years, anyway.

Brahumbug · 04/07/2022 19:53

Mine is about 8p a mile, but it runs on lpg at 79p a litre.😁

LeroyJenkinssss · 04/07/2022 20:11

Mines 8p/mile electric but using charging stations out and about as don’t have a home charger. I put £730 in from January to May and did just over 9k miles.

oh my word!! Just worked it out - my old car did around 40mpg which works out as 25p/mile so the same miles would have cost me £2252. Blimey.

DownNative · 04/07/2022 21:17

My 2007 Astra works out as costing £1.25 a day getting to work and back.

A 2017 Astra I've got my eye on works out as costing £0.76p a day for the same trip. And it's had a price drop in sale price too which saves about £800 for me!
