What can't I keep any flowers alive?

These are quite new. Only planted them a few days ago but already they are wilting and dying.
This is my 2nd attempt. I put them in new compost that said it was right and made sure I watered them everyday but it's still happening.
What am I doing wrong?

Is something nibbling them? I water from the bottom and make sure they aren’t in direct sunlight.

Overwatering? It suffocates the roots that need oxygen to breathe. I only water my pots twice a week maybe 3 times if v hot

Yes I find a little neglect does them well!

Deadhead flowers will encourage more to come. Flower plants are looking to create seeds. So if you let a flower die and leave it there, the plant energy goes into making seeds and thinking its life for this season is over (or forever if uts an annual plant). So cut dead blooms off to encourage more.

Also the flowers look like they need replanting and put into larger containers or in the ground, with space between to grow.

Kezzie200 · 03/07/2022 09:54

It could also be overwatering. Do the containers drain away?

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 03/07/2022 09:55

Pot is too small, but also, something is eating the leaves.

Timeforabiscuit · 03/07/2022 09:57

Take the plastic pot out and check all around for slugs and snails, the plastic makes a perfect hiding place for them, idI'be tempted to plant directly in the ceramic outer pot, as long as it has drainage holes in the bottom just pop a few pebbles in the bottom and then add soil.

Plants do look sorry for themselves as they acclimatise, but they do bounce back after a week or so. But I think your main issue is a snail munching away at it and perhaps overwatering.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/07/2022 10:14

Does the big pot have holes in the bottom?

If it does have holes in the bottom id plant the flowers straight into the big pot (ditch the plastic pot.)

Water when dry, can be once a day or if it's been raining every few days.

abigailsnan · 03/07/2022 10:40

They need a much larger pot to start with and don't water every day they will become water-logged and drown the roots, rather than watering directly into the compost spray the top flowers don't water in direct sunlight as this will scorch the leaves, good luck x

Suma2021 · 03/07/2022 11:55

As others say, needs bigger pot and maybe less watering. Just make sure compost doesn't dry out. I only water mine every few days if its been dry but not hot. Daily if hot and dry.
Water compost, not plant. And if its a hot day, water in early morning or evening so that plant doesn't get scorched from water in direct sun.

If these are new though, they might take a bit of time to adapt to a new environment - maybe they were covered in the garden centre and need time to get used to being outside properly. So hang in there and they might perk up!

The plants themselves are not wilting and dying. What you are seeing are the individual petunia flowers dying.

You need to deadhead the flowers when they start to droop (caution, petunia stems are sticky), making sure you cut off the whole seed head. This will encourage the plant to make more flowers.

Also, plant directly into the ceramic pot if it has a drainage hole. Cover the drainage hole with a layer of pebbles so that the hole doesn't get blocked with compost, and water can drain away.

Water every couple of days if it doesn't rain.

I do over water. I thought that was the thing to do. Thanks for the lesson, I'm really keen to learn about gardening but finding it really confusing !
Definitely a lesson learnt with this tho, thank you all!
