Is Jonathan Creek suitable for a 10 year old?

My DD has worked her way through every episode of Death in Paradise and wants another detective series to watch. I’ve never watched Jonathan Creek. Is it ok for her? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Probably if you watch it with her to debrief any scary bits....it's been a long time since I watched it but I do like Alan Davies.
There may be some sexual references you deem inappropriate.

BasilParsley · 02/07/2022 21:07

Jonathan Creek is better than Death in Paradise and takes sleuthing plots to a higher level. It is potentially suitable for your DD as long as you are there to help explain things if necessary..

TerffLonDon · 02/07/2022 21:08

God, I loved Jonathan Creek 😁! I think it’s rated 15 but obviously each episode will be different, I can’t remember in detail and I watched them as an adult so wouldn’t necessarily have been on my radar.

Maybe try IMDB to check?

There are some mildly risqué jokes that could go over her head, and a couple of the murders are a bit gory, but it’s probably a good age - I watched it when I was about 11-12, when it was on BBC.

TerffLonDon · 02/07/2022 21:09

That was just the nudity link 😁 but there’s other categories there too

Mushroo · 02/07/2022 21:18

Yeh should be fine, I used to watch it with my grandma and she passed away when I was 8.5 so I must have been quite young.

i had a weird crush on Jonathan Creek😂

bogoblin · 02/07/2022 21:20

I watched Jonathan Creek as a kid and turned out fine 😜 I loved it! Still do and still love a mystery. I'd maybe watch a bit yourself and then judge for yourself whether or not your daughter would get on with it. Agree with some sexual references and jokes that she probably won't get till she's older.

I was so proud of the ones I solved myself!

Mariposista · 02/07/2022 21:25

How brilliant that your daughter is into these shows. They really get your brain working. You could try her on Midsomer Murders or New Tricks too. Ok there are a few gory scenes but they tend to be quite tongue in cheek and they always end well.

MadeinBelfast · 02/07/2022 21:28

If you're looking for suggestions my 9 year old loves McDonald and Dodds on ITV. There aren't many episodes but I did skip one as it covered sexual assault and he's quite sensitive. The rest of the episodes seem ok, I find stuff goes over their heads at that age anyway.

Phyllis321 · 02/07/2022 21:34

One of the later series had a fairly horrific murder scene, a throat-cutting whilst hanging upside down. I was surprised how gruesome it was
There was also an episode where people ended up drowning in a huge tank filled with rotting corpses..

linenalltheway · 02/07/2022 21:35

Maybe Shakespeare and Hathaway? I can't remember all the plots though

abc5432 · 02/07/2022 21:54

The Mallorca Files? It has a daytime slot which tends to mean it is tamer.

abc5432 · 02/07/2022 21:56

The NZ series The Brokenwood Mysteries is full of lovable characters/humour but some of the death scenes are a bit gory/weird/inappropriate e.g. the Rugby Club one.

Pbjontoast · 02/07/2022 22:03

My DD is 15 now and a lover of all things involving a good old murder! Both her and DS12 love Death in Paradise. DD loves Midsomer Murders (too 'boring' according to DS) and also Jonathan Creek. (Watched since about 12yo).There's some risqué comments in JC I guess, but it'd probably go over her head, and nothing too bad; although some scenes may be a bit creepy.

You can't beat the jolly theme tune at the beginning of each Death in Paradise on the finding of the first victim 😄.

Also worth mentioning I read there's going to be a spin off of Death in Paradise with Humphrey and Martha, set in England. Worth looking out for.

Krispy Marshall spin off

TheBigotyBoggart · 02/07/2022 22:07

My daughter had nightmares about the one where someone was buried behind the wall. She was about 10 at the time. She was convinced someone had been killed for the TV show. It would be worth checking out the content of each one carefully. Some of them are ok.

Pbjontoast · 02/07/2022 22:09

Actually, the more I think about it, my DD would definitely have been scared by some JC scenes at 10yo.

Has she seen Rosemary and Thyme? Bit tame but all non scary deaths like DIP.

DD also loved Poirot from that age. Books and BBC adaptations.

SpikeWithoutASoul · 02/07/2022 22:11

Thank you so much everyone! I’ll definitely watch the first episode with her but sounds like it’ll be fine. Will look at the other suggestions too. She tried Shakespeare and Hathaway but it didn’t grab her. I heard Richard Herring describe Jonathan Creek as, “like Death in Paradise but good.” 😁

OP posts:
CuteOrangeElephant · 02/07/2022 22:12

Father Brown is quite tame.

SpikeWithoutASoul · 02/07/2022 22:13

Hmmm. Sounds more like I’ll need to watch it all with her if some episodes are scarier than others.

I loved Jonathan creek when I was young. I was definitely watching it at 10 if not younger

Awrite · 02/07/2022 22:19

I would love to rewatch Jonathan Creek with one of my kids. Great family viewing.

Reminds me of my Dad and us 4 kids watching these cheesy dramas. Lovejoy was a particular favourite.

Floralnomad · 02/07/2022 22:19

I think the early episodes with Caroline Quentin are probably suitable .

TheFoodtheFadandtheFugly · 02/07/2022 22:24

There are some dated and troubling sexual references and scenes depicted - kinks, whips, provocative sexual language, especially in the first few episodes - Creek's magician boss is one example. You need to watch it before hand and then have that discussion with her.

There are also some graphic and disturbing scenes of the crimes and the aftermath in some episodes. I loved murder mysteries etc already at that age, but they do need checking.

SpaceJamtart · 02/07/2022 22:49

It should be fine I watched them when I was about 9, there is obviously murders but nothing worse than death in paradise

EtiquetteQuestion · 02/07/2022 23:34

I re-watched most of the Jonathan Creek episodes during lockdown and I was surprised to find it more sexual than I remembered - a few topless women here and there, inappropriate groping etc.
