If you have bifolds in the U.K., how many days per year do you have them open ?

And did you think it was worth the money ?

Honestly? I open ours every day. I like the cold, it airs the house out and I just prefer them open 😂

User79865765 · 02/07/2022 20:42

Most days between May and September

WelshMoth · 02/07/2022 20:46

Do you all have zero profile videos-folds? I.e. a flat rate to file between the two? That's what I thought I was getting until I visited the build and saw that I have to step over a threshold to get in and out. The company didn't actually tell me that because of UK weather, they don't fit zero threshold because of the wind and the rain!

Sorry to derails OP, but definitely worth you checking if you're getting them.

(Assuming that you're in the UK).

butterflyfox · 02/07/2022 20:47

Every day

myplace · 02/07/2022 20:51

The threshold thing is important!

Mine causes people to trip up, it's quite dangerous. You also need to be careful about where you put furniture, if you want to open them.

MrsJamin · 02/07/2022 20:52

We had them (East facing) and fully opened them only a few times a year. I think we should have just got sliding doors or something else. They use up so much space when you pull them back.

Hoolihan · 02/07/2022 20:55

Almost every day Apr - Oct.

cozycat1 · 02/07/2022 21:00

The single pane that is the door to the back is open most days in summer to get out to the back garden. Fully opened up, maybe about one a year!! It's just not warm enough. The architect said as much when we were building and advised fixed glass.

ArcticSkewer · 02/07/2022 21:01

never. just the single door, which i do quite like.

Flaunch · 02/07/2022 21:01

All the time! Absolutely worth it.

1990s · 02/07/2022 21:06

South facing, as others have said every day April - October

Chocoqueen · 02/07/2022 21:08

We have a north facing garden in the SE and have them open loads, would be open more but dd has just learnt how to climb in and out so need to shut them to stop her escaping...

IronChef · 02/07/2022 21:15

Maybe once a year, if that. Def not worth it for us (in north west, so mostly cold and rainy). My exH insisted on it when we were doing renovations and even he would agree it's not worth it. Plus awkward/expensive for blinds which is like but it's not feasible. Use the single door every day though.

KingscoteStaff · 02/07/2022 21:18

In London, south facing. Open every day April - September by first person to get up. Only closed if actually raining.

Twizbe · 02/07/2022 21:21

We don't have bifolds but we do have an entire wall sliding door in our kitchen / living room.

We are north east facing. We have it open most days from April to October. Fully open about 5 days so far this year. It's amazing though on really hot days to have that whole wall open. If we then open a tiny window on the other side of the house it cools everywhere down.

MuddlingThroughLifeLittleByLittle · 02/07/2022 21:30

Not bi folds but huge patio doors. Every single day. Even if ite 10 min in winter. Same as my windows without fail all open wide daily even in snow for 10 min but all day from April to oct ish
Garden South facing

GetOvaIt2 · 02/07/2022 21:31

Most days April to October

Lottle · 02/07/2022 21:33

Probably not relevant to your situation and I have no personal experience, but have you seen bifold windows? I saw them on a programme and thought they looked great

BlueThursday · 02/07/2022 21:37

Central Scotland here and have the single door open loads and the full doors maybe a few times a month from April to October

ours came with the house so can’t comment on price/value realy

ObviouslyNotNow · 02/07/2022 21:38

Yes, North facing in the SE, and we have them open if we’re in the house and it’s over about 20C. DH has spent the last few weeks sitting just inside and working with them wide open, as he’s still large working from home.

If it’s really hot, we leave them open until late and open a window on the other side of the house and one on the top floor. Unless it’s completely windless, we then get a good flow of air through the house which cools it down.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 02/07/2022 21:39

Sorry just typed a long reply and deleted it
but basically I’m shocked at so many saying every single day !
os that because you want it air the house or something ?
we currently have French doors and only have both wide open not that often at all

so I would have thought a whole wall basically removed would be even less
Interesting to hear tho

Nd yes the bi food windows look great

We live in the city in an apartment but I always wonder about bugs coming in with those huge bi-fold doors- especially in the evening and being at ground level opening onto a garden. Moths seem to get in my apartment on the 6th floor when the window is just cracked open half an inch never mind a whole chunk of the house open to the elements inviting every single thing with wings and legs.

Our balcony doors stay shut once dusk is approaching for this very reason.

WoolyMammoth55 · 02/07/2022 21:52

We are in SW and have them all the way across the back of the house, we love them and have them open most days May - Oct and also open them up on fine winter days to air the house (though admittedly not for hours and hours!)

They are spectacular and were brilliant value. Fold up very slim.

We have as close to a level threshold as possible, with a very thin 1cm drainage strip set into the patio a foot or so outside the doors. The trip hazard is less than 2 cm high, the difference between the inside and outside of the frame. Took a bit of back and forth with the installers and our project manager but definitely worth it, it's great to have no step!

goldfinchonthelawn · 02/07/2022 21:55

Not bifolds, just french doors to garden from kitchen. Opened every day all day long in summer at weekends, and for 10-30 mins in winter (by me) depending on when DH comes downstairs and complains about the cold! I love fresh air.

Crackercrazy · 02/07/2022 21:55

We have 3-door bifolds - we open the ‘main’ door a lot but actually rarely have them all fully open. At least I don’t but my DH might - he was one for ‘bringing the outside in’ but to me it can stay outside, thank you very much! I can’t be dealing with all the flies and bugs.

I do love the light and with the low winter sun, sitting by the window is really warm.
