Are you tipping less?

I realised the other day that I barely ever tip anymore as I don't really carry cash these days. If there's an option to tip on the card reader I will if it's been good service but otherwise I just don't tip anymore. I felt a bit bad when I realised. If you're a waiter/waitress/hairdresser etc, have you noticed a big decrease in tipping now that more people don't carry cash?

I have a friend who works in a bar and she said they get much less tips then they did pre pandemic. Not sure if thats a mix of people not having the money or people not carrying cash.

OompaLoompaa · 02/07/2022 19:13

Probably about the same as I’ve found it gets added on automatically now.

Outoutoutshout · 02/07/2022 19:15

I've not been anywhere where it's been added automatically.

No change for me, I always tip if service warrants it and I always have some cash on me.

ivykaty44 · 02/07/2022 19:19

more tips presently, in fact fathers day was a particularly good shift recently

ThreeB · 02/07/2022 19:20

I tried to tip in a restaurant recently and was told they couldn't accept a cash tip.

I just make sure I keep a few £5 notes handy for take away delivery people and serving staff if I am paying card.

Whopbamboom · 02/07/2022 20:02

Yes, but largely because the places we tend to go have all gone order and pay on the app. Actual service and interaction with anyone is the bare minimum and often a different person will bring drinks/each course, so who you're tipping isn't always clear.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/07/2022 20:06

I've stopped tipping my hairdresser as I never carry cash (and it's double the price now)

Wonder what would happen if someone left a £10 note on the table? Would it be just left? Would they run after them to return it? Curious !

EBearhug · 02/07/2022 20:24

I'm tipping less. I would have tipped this evening, but there wasn't a way to add it when I paid by card, and they won't take cash. I don't care quite enough to argue over it.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 02/07/2022 20:26

But to answer the origins Q, I tip more this year and always cash

I decided this year to direct my money more purposefully and although I go to hairdresser etc v rarely, I tip well.

go after the people at the table to ensure they hadn't left it by mistake...most people leaving a tip hand it to the staff as they want the staff to have the tip and not others

ivykaty44 · 02/07/2022 20:30

'm tipping less. I would have tipped this evening, but there wasn't a way to add it when I paid by card,

people just make the amount more - literally if the bill is £90 then the customer asks for the bill to be rounded up to £100 and pays with credit card

Overthebow · 02/07/2022 20:31

Yes I tip less. Everything’s more expensive now so where I used to leave a £5 or £10 tip I now don’t.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/07/2022 20:33

I don't tip at all and never have.

goldfinchonthelawn · 02/07/2022 20:44

I really want to stop tipping my hairdresser. No offence to her but a cut and blow dry is now £60+ anywhere near me. An extra tenner on top feels a bit eye watering.

shiningstar2 · 02/07/2022 20:47

I have always tipped in restaurants unless the food/ service was awful which would be rare. Lately though a couple of places have added a 12.5% 'optional' top. I really don't like this. I tip what I can afford and it's a bit awkward to say take part of the tip off please. I think people will either pay it whether it's the amount they want to pay that amount or not or they will just ask for the whole tip to be taken off. Service staff are often on the minimum wage so a decent top is a real help. However some of the people being served are in minimum wage jobs with no opportunity to get tips so it's a bit unfair to put 12.5% extra on the bill which n such a way that you have to opt out rather than opting in which was the traditional way of tipping. Especially as the added percentage includes every drink, every extra.

bigbluebus · 02/07/2022 20:56

We ate out this evening - not anywhere posh but somewhere we've been before. Bill was £28 and DH paid by card. We left £5 cash tip on the table as the 2 waitresses who served us were very friendly and efficient. We tip for good service.

MeMe3Spoons · 02/07/2022 20:56

I never tip and wish others wouldn't either. The origins of tipping are morally questionable and the practise drives down the cost of labour in jobs that are already poorly paid. Businesses should pay their workers fairly and build the cost into their advertised prices.

lljkk · 02/07/2022 21:00

Mean. You didn't have to have that hair cut or meal out, if you can afford them at all, shouldn't stiff on the tip.

I try to pay full bill using cash so not finding it hard to tip.
I ask the server if they want tips in cash or added to bill if paying electronically.
I wondered if it was server's choice not to take cash tips.

Yes, I'd prefer this too. I mean, I do tip in restaurants etc. as that isn't where we are atm, but hopefully it might be in the future.

WombleFan1 · 02/07/2022 21:02

I work in hospitality and we get more tips than we've ever had before. People are being extremely generous
