Anyone else couldn’t get into Stranger Things?

Over the last few days, people have been posting relentlessly about Stranger Things on Facebook.

I have the first season a go when it first came out, and I couldn’t get into it at all.

I am obsessed so can't help you sorry 😄 might be a genre thing tho as I always go for stuff like this.

I love it. Bloody love it. When the final episodes of the last series were aired me, DH and DD had a themed viewing party just the three of us coz we're saddos Grin

Period stuff like The Crown and Bridgerton however bores the shit off me.

Each to their own.

For me the nostalgia is huge ( I was their age at the time it's set) and very authentic, even tiny details like Mrs Wheelers Tupperware pots. I read the book World Upside Down which accompanies it and the love that had gone into making the series is incredible. No CGI and the music (as in theme music rather than tracks) is all original done with a synthesiser. Not all tv now has the same level of love invested in it.

I adore the characters and their relationships too especially in the first couple of series. I'd also climb Hopper like a tree. Probability Billy too if he shaved the dodgy facial hair off.

To clarify very little CGI.

The monster is an actual person in a costume. It's fabulous!

In a world slowly being taken over by the Marvel universe and it's formulaic rubbish ST is very refreshing.

Watched a couple of episodes of the first series. I initially liked the whole 1980s Spielberg vibe but that kind of sci-fiish/horror genre isn't really for me.

I seem to half-watch so many series. Heartstopper, Queen's Gambit. Quite like them but not enough to see them through. Would love to find a new series to really get into. Last I found was The Last Kingdom.

ellebelli · 28/11/2022 11:36

We only started watching because my tween(at the time)wanted to.
Started off not really paying attention to loving it.
Didn't rate series 4 so much.
Love the nostalgia and the music, plus the characters are great.
Hopper and Dustin are the best!
Yes to hopper(latest series in particular)and Billy (was upset he died)

ellebelli · 28/11/2022 11:37

Oh and that tween is now 15 and not really interested,we sat and watched wothout him!😀

VioletLemon · 28/11/2022 11:42

Same! Love the 80's vibe in S1 and music etc but just can't handle the storyline. I don't get it, v complicated.

In saying that I'm pretty thick when it comes to anything more complicated than Virgin River.

Not sure why I don't gel to it, don't enjoy SciFi so maybe that. Acting is v good so no explanation. Does make me feel like I'm missing out though!

Billy is very cute even if I'm Mrs Wheelers age 😜😁

Knowing it was already several seasons in put me off. It was quite a good story for one series of 8 episodes, say, but I couldn't sustain my interest for however many seasons there are.

RoyKeaneisRight · 28/11/2022 11:51

I absolutely love it, I'm probably the right age for the nostalgia.
But sure wouldn't the world be a boring place if we all liked the same thing.

Lentilweaver · 28/11/2022 11:53

Me. I found the kids annoying and I don't think I can relive 80s fashions again. I like the music though.

To be fair, I find monster stories/supernatural/horror mostly dull.

FuckabethFuckor · 28/11/2022 12:00

I quite like it. I actually found the first series the dullest, although it redeemed itself in the last couple of episodes. It's been improving, pace-wise, since then.

My main problem with it is that I find David Harbour very irritating. Especially in series three, when he went off the deep end over Elle's teenage stuff. It was scenery-chewing, shouty over-acting — and not in a good way.

I really like Maya Hawke, though. She's terrific.

RaininginDarling · 28/11/2022 12:07

Yes. I'm indifferent about it. Loved Winona (I'm the right age to appreciate her comeback) and the Stand by Me vibes, but it is a kids' show and as such, doesn't have enough going on to hold my attention.

I'm not being snide by the way, I just not a fan of most teen-based shows, which is fine cos presumably, I'm not their target market.

Having said that, I did find myself watching Paper Girls on Amazon one bored weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the rather existential themes underlying that. Perhaps there's more to Stanger Things than I give it credit for but it wasn't apparent in series one, for me anyway.
