How do I ‘spa’?

PriamFarrl · 02/07/2022 08:21

I’ve booked me and DH into a spa in a few weeks but I’ve never been to one before and I have no idea how they work.

Can you explain to me how it works please?
I understand there are all these facilities, like a pool etc but what do I do?

Please explain it like I’m 5.

You relax by wandering around trying out each of the facilities and experiencing each until you feel like trying the next thing. Then you probably go back to the ones you liked best.

Read the instructions if provided beforehand by the spa.

Take a pair of flop flops and swim suit.

Some treatments need you to not have shaved up to 24 hours beforehand.

Talk to the receptionist beforehand about popular treatments and the ones you need to book ahead of the visit.

You walk into the spa locker room. Change into your swimsuit and put on the robes provided.

Wander around trying out different rooms and therapies.

Change into swimming costume, put on a robe, get a towel.
Go into pool area and put towel on a sunlounger if they are available. Relax on lounger, if no loungers or chairs then hang towel and or robe on wall hooks.
Use the facilities.
If you are having lunch you may want to pack a spare swimming costume do you can wear a dry one for lunch under your robe.
I always like to allow a long time for a lovely shower at the end using all the nice products.

Check with the spa.
I always booked treatments in advance, it's likely you will run into limited choice on the day and it also means you can schedule your day better.

Check if you need to change for meals, some do a form of robe-lunch, others only have a restaurant where you have to dress again for.

Have a small bag for phones (on silent), book and if you wear glasses, a case for them.

I also took a second swimsuit, I don't like sitting around in a wet swimsuit and having my robe getting wetter.

There will be treatments available like massage, pedicure, facials but they may require pre booking and will cost extra. So decide in advance if you want any of these.

The stuff that’s included and not pre booked is usually pool(s), jacuzzi, steam room/sauna which you wander round and try out, there will be loungers to sit on too. Wear swimsuit and there’s usually a dressing gown, towels and flip flops provided. But check.

Oooh I love a spa day. Maybe take a magazine or book to read. I read a whole book last time, it was bliss!

If you book a massage (involving oil) do it later in the afternoon - so you can enjoy the sauna and swimming beforehand

You said "like I'm five " so I'll take you at your word and add a little detail. All spas are a little different but this how it is at my favourite day spa.

Arrive- reception will ask for your precompleted health questionnaire or fill it in with you. Asks about any health concerns, skin problems, pregnancy etc. Some responses lead to advice not to use some facilities. Get given a towel and robe.

Head to changing room to put on swim suit. This spa is separate men / women rooms and mostly open plan with a few curtained off private cublicles. Showers available. Personal stuff in lockers

Wearing swimsuit & flip flops and the robe they gave me, carrying a towel walk through to spa area.

There's 8 different rooms with different experiences . A sign suggests which order to try them in (working from least hot to most hot). Example: steam room, sauna, aromatherapy room, ice shower (!).

If the room has a door please close it quickly to keep the heat in . Doorway dithering is frowned on.

There are water dispensers everywhere: keep drinking little and often.

After going round I might spend half an hour on the sunbed by the pool then have a swim or hottub.

Lunch. Some people dress. Others stay in their bathers & robe.

Might have a treatment next. Facials and massage are lovely but any oils might limit what you can do after.

Back to the saunas and steam rooms. A sleep? An exercise class (all v beginner friendly).

I would agree to taking a book. Also try not to be chatty in the heat rooms - generally people prefer to sit quietly.

Thank you. That is exactly the information I needed.
I might resent taking DH with me…….

We are staying overnight so we should be able to check into our room after 2. This place is robes for breakfast and lunch with proper clothes for dinner.

Im guessing it’s not worth wearing makeup on the day really.

wearing makeup wouldn’t work for the sauna, steam room, pool, jacuzzi or facial treatment, so no
