Help! Can't agree on wedding wine

Wedding is getting close and we can't agree on wine to go with the meal. It's mostly lamb and we're providing one red and one white of reasonable quality but not ridiculous price. Each need to be a type that most people would enjoy and nobody hate rather than one person's favourite. We can't choose a selection within each colour.

Which red would you like? Merlot? Maalbec? Rioja? Cabernet Sauvignon? Something else?

Which white would you enjoy with your meal? Pinot grigio? Chardonnay? Sauvignon Blanc? Something else.

ABC for a reason! It's revolting. I'd go Merlot and SauvB for the tables.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 01/07/2022 23:08

The one you like, and if there is a tie the cheapest. If people want a different wine they can put their hands in their pockets.

gingersplodgecat · 01/07/2022 23:13

If you're having lamb, then you need something crisp to clean the palate, so I'd avoid the merlot and the chardonnay. Both of those are pretty full-on and okay for an evening meal, but a bit heavy for daytime.

Pinot always gives me a headache and saiv blanc can be really dry and acidic so not for all ...i would do chardonnay white or a white rioja if available.... malbec good middle groun

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 01/07/2022 23:22

I'd recommend a Riesling for white.
Pinot Grigio can be a bit harsh , as well as Chardonnay , though an unoaked Chardonnay would work well but you don't need to be faffing about with sourcing that.

Pinot Gris is smooth and easily drinkable , as is Gavi di Gavi .

Sauvignon Blanc can be a bit piss watery and a bit acidic.

Reds... a Tempranillo or a Rioja would be good all-rounders.

Yamadori · 01/07/2022 23:25

Rioja, Pino grigio.

There you go.

Laughinggoat · 01/07/2022 23:28

Malbec - red
pinot grigio - white

absolutely do not choose chardonnay ugh!

Aria999 · 01/07/2022 23:30

Menage a trois California red blend. Seriously drinkable and reasonably priced.

I would not go for a Malbec as it really needs a while to breathe which it might not get.

Aria999 · 01/07/2022 23:35

And yes I like Pinot Grigio too. Ecco domani and scarpetta are my favorites.

knackeredagain · 01/07/2022 23:35

Lamb and Merlot is a lovely combination but if you want to cater for everyone Malbec is more generic. I like a Cabernet but it can be a bit heavy going for some.

White I prefer Pinot but it has to be icy cold. It doesn’t really go with lamb for me. Sauvignon is a crowd pleaser and wouldn’t clash. I’d steer clear of Chardonnay, simply because it’s a bit sweet for many people.

DramaAlpaca · 01/07/2022 23:36

A cabernet sauvignon or a malbec for the red. Nothing too heavy or oaky like rioja.

A pinot grigio for the white. Sauvignon blanc can be too sharp and acidic for some, and it's hard to find a nice chardonnay.

Joyfultoes · 01/07/2022 23:38

I’d say cab sav and Sauvignon. But someone else will say something different - there’s no one answer. As long as the wine is decent people will drink it

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/07/2022 23:40

ABC darling.

Anything But Chardonnay.

Joyfultoes · 01/07/2022 23:40

@WishILivedInThrushGreen noone recommends a Riesling for a wedding. It’s incredibly divisive

ZenNudist · 01/07/2022 23:42

Malbec and a Sauvignon Blanc
Not chardonnay or pinot grigio.

Cabernet sauvignon is quaffable.

Just ask caterers for popular easy drinking reasonably priced wine you like.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 01/07/2022 23:45

@Joyfultoes
It's a bit divisive but a matter of opinion.

The default of Sauvignon Blanc is so much worse than Riesling.

You need to think about the food and not about the quaffability.

Just an opinion.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 01/07/2022 23:53

If your friends judge you on the wine you have paid for and offer to them for free, then your problem is not which grape to choose.

Ponderingwindow · 02/07/2022 00:00

for White, when I have to please a diverse set of palettes, I get a blend. Horror I know, but I’ve got family who want super sweet and family who want super dry and are almost militant in their choices A clerk at a local wine shop helped me pick a blend for a holiday meal and they all drank it like like fish.

SunflowerGardens · 02/07/2022 00:55

Most people like a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec

Yes it's an acquired taste and you have to presume not everyone will have acquired that taste. Most people won't have.

daisydalrymple · 02/07/2022 01:21

I work in a pub restaurant. Sauv B is the most generically liked white. Pinot Grigio very popular, but too acidic for some. Chardonnay hated by too many to be a crowd pleaser.
but for sauv b, I wouldn’t go with a NZ. Chilean is more of an all rounder. Those that love a NZ SB love it. But those that don’t, really dislike it! Too flowery for some.
For red i’d go with a Malbec. It’s the more popular choice right now.

Yes everyone is weirdly down on blends but there are some really good ones. I think it's snobbery.

It's almost as though the very experienced wine makers put them together for a good reason....

ohgawdnowivedoneit · 02/07/2022 01:30

Malbec and Sauvignon blanc

TooManyPJs · 02/07/2022 02:06

Merlot and Pinot.

Aquamarine1029 · 02/07/2022 02:14

Malbec and Pinot Grigio.
