Books and tv- but no murders/psychological drama/action?

I feel like I’m the only person who doesn’t enjoy true crime, police dramas, detectives, murders or actions themed stories!
I really want to get back into modern fiction and just want to read a good story that is gripping because the characters and the plot are engaging without the need to solve a mystery!

I thought Coleen Hoover but then the book I picked up was all about a rimediresti tale of an author /dead husbands etc.

I used to love Isabel Allende, I liked Sadie smith and chimamanda Adichie. Also loving mirror and the light.
I must confess I haven’t read much Atwood or Hilary mantel apart from the wolf hall trilogy, however think I could do with something light hearted to start off.

Also loved no1 ladies detective agency even though they were technically mysteries!

So any good light read recommendations? I would love to hear from other non-fans of crime/murder!!

Otherwise I’m in danger of reaching for georgette Heyer again these holidays!!

And honestly I have no issue with those genres, just doesn’t do anything for me. I never even got in to line of duty and think I must be the only person I know who didn’t!!

Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason is one l just read and really liked..no mystery to solve.
Also Left on Tenth by Delia Ephron is autobiographical of about 4 years of her life.
These are my latest recommendations.

I’m the same - can’t stand grim and dark books or TV that usually has a plot involving someone being brutally murdered. It means I don’t watch much TV nowadays!

Have you tried Marian Keyes’ books - Rachel’s Holiday and the others? They are marketed like chick-lit but are a bit more serious.

If you like Georgette Heyer, you might enjoy Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel by Susanna Clarke (also a tv series), or the Temeraire books (Napoleonic Wars with dragons) by Naomi Novik. She also wrote Uprooted and Spinning Silver, which are retellings of fairytales.

Black Water Sister by Zen Cho is a contemporary fantasy set in Malaysia where the main character is haunted by her dead grandmother, and is very entertaining.

Maeve Binchey and Rosamund Pilcher’s books are gentle but entertaining.

Thank you so much! Lots of names I have always heard of but overlooked, I have plenty to get me going now!
Glad to hear I’m not the only one! I do wonder why tv is so crime heavy!!

I came on to recommend No.1 Ladies Detective Agency! Even though it technically is a mystery series...not got anything else atm I’m afraid!
