Just wondered. I used one for the first time today.

Ok well in case anyone is interested or going to one themselves, you pay £5 for a family and for this I got:

Selection of veggies. Some yoghurt, (plain) Soup- (Booths- not sure where from as we don't have this locally) Butter, mascarpone pasta sauce. Some tins. Bread.
Some cereal.

It was a bit disappointing as they had lots of nice Bighams ready meals but they were all with mince...(we don't eat red meat)

I have a pantry in my kitchen. What's the pantry you're referring to?

Orangesandlemons77 · 30/06/2022 17:17

Oh sorry should have explained, it is a 'community food pantry' - aims to distribute food from Fareshare which I think gets food from shops close to the BBE date or other stock - with those on low incomes. Families pay £5 and individuals £3 I think.

I've just looked it up. It sounds really great.

I think that food pantries and similar projects are fantastic and wish that every area could have one.
I'd also like to see more recognition for the people that run them. They're often volunteer run and take a lot more planning than you'd think.

We have a community fridge in our town which takes food at its best before from supermarkets and passes it out to anyone who wants. It's free but there is a limit on items- 5+bread I think. It's aimed to reduce waste as well as help out those who might be struggling so they make a big deal out of it being for anyone to use.
I have used it a couple of times but it's only open a couple of times a week and not when I'm around.

I've had to use one several times before. My local one is free to use, but a limit of 6 items plus bread and milk.

This was 10-12 items for families, 5-6 for singles I think
