Disappointed with overtime earnings

AmberGer · 30/06/2022 06:49

As our summer holiday is approaching, we could use a few extra pennies in the pot for spending money, so I did an extra 7 hours last week. I should have checked an online calculator to see what my take home pay would be, I was hoping it would be more than it actually is, I got my wage slip today (I get paid weekly) and for working an extra 7 hours, I've got £40 more than usual.
I will keep doing overtime but it is demoralising when it works out to such a low amount after deductions, especially as I've worked so hard to earn it.
Not looking for advice, just venting, sorry.

We’ve just been told that any overtime has to be taken as time owing, so we don’t even get paid for it

KangarooKenny · 30/06/2022 06:54

As in we don’t get extra money.

SmileyPiuPiu · 30/06/2022 06:57

It's the same reason some people who work 4 days don't pick up the extra 5th day. It's like that 5th day is paid less due to all the tax etc. And then there can be an extra days childcare on top. Anyway, it's £40 you wouldn't have had so try and think positive.

It's rubbish isn't it Kangaroo.
My other job has that policy too.

We don't get paid overtime, which is rubbish but I do 'get it back' by taking slightly longer lunches and hoping no one notices!

Depending how many of you are going on holiday, I'd look at the £40 as paying for a meal out.

To actually get a worthwhile amount from overtime, you have to have a time and a half rate to make it worthwhile. My adult DS only does Saturday overtime where he works as this is what’s offered, it’s hardly worth it for him to do extra in the week, otherwise like you say at least 30/35% is taken in tax, ni and pension.

Where I worked many years ago, I job shared with someone and we covered each others holidays. My colleague asked for her extra money in cash, as she had to pay extra hours to childminders, she wasn’t stupid.

We don’t get overtime either. We have to take it time owing. However, if service needs are stretched, and I do an additional list on a day when I wouldn’t be working, I get the day back, and the difference in pay between a work day and a Saturday. I thought I was in the money until I worked out it wasn’t worth it, as it puts me above the tax threshold and I pay more tax. I end up working a long day for a difference of approximately £20. I now only do them them if I have to.

You get time and a half after 37.5 hours.
My total hours for last week (at that job, I have 2 jobs) are 30
Anything over 37.5 is time and a half
I've worked extra hours this week too, (36) unfortunately still under time and a half threshold.

I can see the logic of that, assuming 37.5 is full time hours then it wouldn’t be fair if a part time person got paid time and a half for working extra hours in a week that a full time person only got time for, does however make it less worthwhile for you. Is the overtime compulsory, if that’s the case don’t bother volunteering for it in future

daffodilandtulip · 30/06/2022 07:14

The Trust I used to work for paid overtime as a new starter rate, regardless of your current rate which was based on years service. So you got even less!

KangarooKenny · 30/06/2022 07:22

When we were paid overtime it was at the same rate as our pay, no extra.

De88 · 30/06/2022 07:26

I always had 2 jobs too OP, got taxed my tax code on one and basic rate on the other so it was never worth doing extra hours particularly on the 2nd Jon. Shite isn't it!

Would it work out better for you to have one tax code to use across both jobs?

De88 · 30/06/2022 07:27

*job of course.

Shade17 · 30/06/2022 08:55

Why would that make a difference? You pay the same amount of tax whether you have 1 job or 5.

latetothefisting · 30/06/2022 08:59

Yeah this is why I never volunteer for overtime when it's offered. Even at time and a half it works out as normal wage by the time all the extra deductions (tax, ni, pension, student loan) come out so isn't worth spending my evenings/weekends working. Student loan deduction are the worst, once that's paid off it won't be AS bad, plus if you over pay tax you should eventually get it paid back. I'd rather get time in lieu if I do work over!

I mean, that's totally fair and normal though.

You do get time and a half for overtime but only once you've done a full working week.

Youre right, unless op earns less than her personal allowance.

  • re whether tax codes make a difference or not
Summerwhereareyou · 30/06/2022 12:47
