Why can I no longer buy washing machine powder?

Hello

I used to buy boxes of washing machine detergent in "tablets" of powder from Tesco which I would put in the detergent drawer.

I can now only seem to get these capsules of liquid detergent which go in the drum. I'm led to believe liquid is not as good for the machine as powder.

I don't like loose powder as a it makes a mess.

What is going on?!

It's highly likely that the powder in tablet form wasn't selling well enough to justify making. I'm happy to use powder, it's better for the machine.

Some Asda have them, Sainsbury’s have an own brand & Wilco sell them I think. They are available on Amazon too.

www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/299624207 they do non bio too.

ChinBristles · 29/06/2022 13:02

@TurquoiseDragon thanks - do you use loose powder? Or in tablet form? Where do you get it?

Oh thanks everyone!

The tesco ones seem to be out of stock online and discontinued in store.
I guess Amazon it is!

Hmm, Persil only seems to have non-bio.
I may have to get my writing paper out and start a campaign to bring back bio powder in tablet form!

Morrisons used to do them but only non bio recently. Have swapped to boxes of own brand powder which seems to last longer.

Nat6999 · 29/06/2022 13:10

I just use ordinary powder as liquid or capsules block the pipes.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 29/06/2022 13:11

I have started using earthbreeze. They are sent to you as a subscription and are dessicated sheets. No mess and just disolve in water.

ChangedUsername0 · 29/06/2022 13:14

The Asda moonflower tablets are good and cheap but yes - often out of stock!

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 29/06/2022 13:20

I buy boxes of powder from Sainsbury's.

dementedpixie · 29/06/2022 13:22

I just use boxes of powder.
Tablets are harder to adjust the dosage

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/06/2022 13:24

I've been using laundry strips like Unexpecteddrivinginstructor. The ones that I use are Tru Earth. www.truearth.uk I much prefer them to liquid or powder for ease of use, they clean just as well and they don't give anyone a rash.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 29/06/2022 13:28

I use boxes of powder, I put it into the drum on top of the clothes. Simple and no mess.

Miraclejelly · 29/06/2022 13:28

Have you looked in places like B&M and Home Bargains. They always seem to have random brands and boxes of powder.

Powder generally is meant to be better because it contains bleach to make the powder appear white.

NoToLandfill · 29/06/2022 13:30

Powder tablets are seen as not high end, so the manufacturers are 'fancying up' to the gel ones.

I'm sticking with Daz powder it's brilliant. And the boxes are amusing.

courgettigreensadwater · 29/06/2022 13:31

Bit of a derail but powder is more likely to block pipes than liquid but both are fine if measured correctly.

It looks like Aldi have stopped selling their Almat brand tablets. The cheeky devils!

LadyEloise1 · 29/06/2022 13:34

It's the same in Ireland.
Tablet detergent is very difficult to buy.
I hate those capsules - they are not as effective as the detergent powders.
I can't get it in my local supermarkets but was able to order it for online delivery from Tesco and bought a few boxes.
There is no problem buying boxed loose detergent.
Have all the big manufacturers stopped making detergent tablets I wonder ?
We don't have Asda, Sainsburys or Morrisons in Ireland.

gingersplodgecat · 29/06/2022 14:31

I use loose washing powder and put it directly into the drum, not in the drawer.

roses2 · 29/06/2022 14:33

I have the same problem - Aldi have been out of stock for several months. I found a box in Lidl but don't know what I'll do when that runs out and I can't buy more!

LadyEloise1 · 28/11/2022 15:00

The Tesco own brand one was made in France. It's probably due to Brexit that it is no longer available, sadly. What with all the palaver re customs and duties to be paid.
Only those feckin gel thingies or boxed loose powder for sale in my local supermarkets . Sad

wonkylegs · 28/11/2022 15:10

I've used loose powder for years, it's not really messy. I have a scoop I keep in the box. I can adjust the dosage for the wash and usually use less and it washes fine.
I used to use the powder tablets but they don't always dissolve, dosage can't be adjusted and they are expensive compared with loose powder. I think it generally washes better since I switched to loose powder.
I won't use liquid tablets and actively object to them when they make something so brightly coloured squishy and attractive to kids when it's so caustic and dangerous for them - it's such a bad idea.

jollygreenpea · 28/11/2022 15:49

Not sure what I'm doing wrong with loose powder as it doesn't make a mess for me. 😁
