Need help making a fab cake for your kids?

I started making cakes when my son was 3 and very specific about what he wanted. I thought I'd don my apron and give it a go. I've been baking and decorating cakes ever since. But I've realised it's very expensive to buy personalised cakes and so I'm wondering if you guys think there is a market for me to go to parents houses and help them do it themselves. Or provide the cake and the decorations so they can put it together themselves. We all know kids love to get involved and my son is 8 now and still joins in with my creations. What do you all think? Any suggestions?
The first pic is my first ever cake and the 2nd one is 3 years later.
I'm completely self taught and do it all in my kitchen at home.

Your cakes are lovely but I'm not sure about the idea if going to people's homes to help make them. Surely your main costs are ingredients and time, the ingredients would remain the same but would it not take longer to show someone how to do something than to just do it yourself?? Or do you mean like group workshops? A workshop in cake decorating for kids might work better?

I’ve done that kind of thing before where I’ve made and iced the cake and then the child’s mum has finished it off with sweets and decorations etc so they can feel like they’ve done it themselves! I’m not sure going and helping them do it would be a viable option for most people, as your time and travel costs compared to the added value you could give would mean they may as well pay someone to make it all.

Great comments, thanks guys. So maybe I could do a couple of workshops in my kitchen? Just some basic tips they could use at home to make their kids a great cake quickly and cheaply?
RoyKentsChestHair did the kids and parents like decorating their own cake?

I can’t see this taking off tbh op. People are either capable/have the time to do it themselves, or they’ll pay someone to do it. I wouldn’t pay someone to come to my house and do it with me

I'd rather roast my own feet than have someone in my kitchen doing something like this Blush

This. I learn stuff like this off YouTube. Imagine having some random in your kitchen, I’d feel awkward af 😬

What about running workshops to teach people to do it themselves? Or specific things like how to make XYZ cake topper, how to decorate cupcakes etc?

RoyKentsChestHair · 29/06/2022 14:36

Yeah I think workshops are a better idea tbh. I’m not sure who ended up doing the decorating tbh as once it was off my hands I just moved on to the next order!

I do know that I’d never eat a cake that was made by children after hosting cupcake making classes for primary kids. One pair of siblings would ice their cakes, then lick off the icing and do it again, then repeat. Eventually the cakes were taken home for parents and grandparents to eat Envy

Oh u guys are amazing! Great comments. I'm going to take your advice and just try and drum up some more customers as I am a single parent and still want to be able to be with my son.

For those of you that have school age children; do your schools have any social media pages? Which ones? What do you find good or bad about them? I'm going to set one up for my sons primary school so looking for tips.

I would definitely go to a workshop to learn how to make cakes! Great idea

Agree with this sorry.

I am both poor and incapable. That is what Asda is for.
