Best market towns/villages in the UK - not South

Hi,

Already have this running in Property, but giving it a go here too.

So we're currently in the east of England, Cambridgeshire way, in a quiet village. It's fine, but I'm not really happy tbh. Can't put my finger on why, it just doesn't feel like home. We were thinking about doing more to the house, but I just don't see the point anymore. It's not the house that doesn't feel like home. It's the area.

Only been here a couple of years, but it's gone up in value by 30%. Saying that, we can't actually move until dc has completed their GCSEs next year, so that could drop by the time we're actually free to move. You never know with the housing market do you?

Anyway, we're all drawn to historic market towns with a buzz about them. Lots of coffee shops, delis, pubs, restaurants and ideally, some art shops. Also would need a good college for dc. One that's particularly known for art.

Two places we absolutely love are Stamford and Helmsley, North Yorkshire. It could be a large village, but with plenty going on. Needs to be a friendly, inclusive area.

Don't want to be too far south, but North Yorkshire would be as far north as we'd go. I know this is a bit vague 😬 but a little bit clueless and just looking for some inspiration and advice.

Top budget would be around the 650k mark, but more comfortable at the 550k mark. Needs to be an area we could afford a detached house with at least 4 bedrooms and a decent size garden.

Thanks very much 🙂

Agree Malton is worth looking at and I’d add Selby and Wetherby as well. Similar part of the world, good links to Leeds and York. Leeds has an art college.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 29/06/2022 13:00

If I had the money and means to do so I would seriously consider Whitby

Ilovechoc12 · 29/06/2022 13:10

I lived in Beverly for a year or so it was nice enough. But Hull area is always grey - not much sun
Plus you are out on a stick …. To get anywhere on the road ….
York is nice

Lichfield. There is a college but I think it only does creative and performance based courses, Tamworth would only be a short bus ride away with a wider range. Or you can get the train into Birmingham in half an hour for a choice of colleges.

Lichfield is beautiful, but the population vote for Michael Fabricant which is disturbing...

LynneBenfield · 29/06/2022 13:25

Bakewell
Matlock
Ledbury (might struggle w budget)
Malvern
Stroud

Remainiac · 29/06/2022 13:33

Knaresborough? Handy for Leeds and Harrogate and York.

Oswestry in north Shropshire for a small market town, good links to Chester, Birmingham and Liverpool. Shrewsbury is close for shopping too. But don’t come, Shropshire is the Uk’s best kept secret as we are the friendliest and most beautiful county.

Shropshire is top of my list for relocation if/when we have to leave the south east.
Unfortunately have teens doing exam years/a levels so no chance for at least 4 years! I've never even been there, but I grew up in Wales and it looks similar to the nice green parts I remember.

PielFerry · 29/06/2022 13:56

Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale and Ulverston (all Cumbria).

Also agree that Lancaster and Shrewbury are great places,

nyorksdad · 29/06/2022 13:56

I've lived in Malton since 2004 and I'm really happy here. Crime is very low, plenty of supermarkets and good local shops. There's a food festival every couple of months

Really good bus or train access to York or Scarborough for cinema/bowling for teens and bigger shops. The A64 can be a bit of a car park in the summer though when people head for the coast.

Work2live · 29/06/2022 14:01

Nantwich, Cheshire. Lovely market town with lots of shops, cafes and restaurants, and your budget would stretch a long way there.

darlingdodo · 29/06/2022 14:01

Richmond
Ilkley
Skipton
Thirsk
Yarm
Northallerton
Penrith
Kendal
Morpeth
Alnwick
Hexham
Corbridge
Kirby Lonsdale
Nantwich
Some may be a bit further north than you're after

PointeShoesandTutus · 29/06/2022 14:01

You’d only just scrape a 4 bed with a big garden in Wetherby/Knaresborough/Poppleton these days. Even Pocklington it’d be tight.

How about the Pennines? Saddleworth, Marsden/Slaithwaite, Uppermill? Hebden Bridge? All very pretty, coffee shops, delis, galleries galore. Quite rural though.

Ledbury in Herefordshire is nice, and there is Hereford College of Arts, and you can get the train to Hereford from Ledbury station.

fightingsleep · 29/06/2022 14:09

Yorkshire Dales? Settle and villages around it are lovely

Lunificent · 29/06/2022 14:13

In Lancashire there are Clitheroe and Ramsbottom. Grassington near Skipton looks nice.

Thefailinghousewife · 29/06/2022 14:13

We have just moved to Shropshire and it’s beautiful and just what you are looking for!

Essexexile · 29/06/2022 14:22

I would also say Beverley and Malton, both have a lot going on, good transport links and plenty of independent shops. Pocklington has an awful lot of new builds going up but not sure the infrastructure is there for them.
We moved north 2 years ago and it’s been the best move we’ve made.

chosenone · 29/06/2022 14:27

Whaley Bridge. Chinley for villages. Mellor near Marple. Bakewell or Buxton for towns.

emmathedilemma · 29/06/2022 14:30

Hebden Bridge

What's Ludlow like? I keep perving on Rightmove properties there

summerlovinvibes · 29/06/2022 15:03

Oundle - about 20 mins from Stamford but smaller but still lots going on. Cheaper than Stamford just about.

Flumpaphone · 29/06/2022 15:09

Northallerton or Stokesley would be good and the Northern School of Art campus is just up the road - very very well renowned

cormorant5 · 29/06/2022 16:03

You are in Cambridgeshire, the list of choices is a long way away from there.
Would you not consider Suffolk? We liked to visit Woodbridge and towns on the rivers. Maldon, colleges at Ipswich. That same light which attracted the painters, which you will miss in Yorkshire.

If you choose carefully good links to London. Variety of places to visit, Duxford Munnings Gallery.

LittleMissRum · 29/06/2022 16:05

Some fantastic suggestions!

@summerlovinvibes Is Oundle in the Peterborough District? I can't find it on Rightmove.
