It’s going to be made into a film, so who would be your dream cast?

this is my first round choice -

Joyce - Lesley Manville (which my phone corrected to Mankiller), who narrates the book on audible.

Elizabeth - Stephanie Cole

Ron - if he was still alive I would definitely have chosen Warren Clarke. I am pondering my alternative.

ibrahim - Art Malik

Chris - Kevin McKidd

Donna - Faith Alabi

Elizabeth is definitely Fiona Shaw! Especially how she does it in Killing Eve early seasons.

the80sweregreat · 30/06/2022 20:55

Fiona Shaw would be great
She is so cool in killing eve

LostCats · 30/06/2022 21:02

I know it sound silly and obvious but I had Judy Dench as Elisabeth the whole time of reading.
i think Ray Winstone for Ron is inspired.

LostCats · 30/06/2022 21:09

Also Penelope Keith as Joyce. The lovely smile and kind, open face…
I binge read both on Monday so a bit over invested…

I didn't like the books, couldn't get into it and don't understand all the hype about them. Is it just me??

RogerThatBravoOne · 30/06/2022 21:25

Joyce - Alison Steadman

Elizabeth - Helen Mirren/Judi Dench/Vanessa Redgrave

Ron - Ray Winstone

Chris - Daniel Ryan

Donna - Marsha Thomason

Ibrahim - Art Malik or Sanjeev Bhaskar

Bogdan- Jason Statham

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2022 21:39

I imagined Ibrahim as Roshan Seth.

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2022 21:40

Actually I think we will find that they cast youngish older actors (if you see what I mean) because they'll hope to film more than one book. I think there is another book coming out next year.

BeenThereBoughtTheTeeShirt · 30/06/2022 21:56

Sherwood will have ruined this but before that was cast, I had Alun Armstrong in mind for Ron (or Philip Jackson ironically), Lesley Manville for Joyce (auto corrected to manhole just then) and Adeel Akhtar for Ibrahim. Andrew Brooke for Bogdan and Jade Eshete as Donna. Penelope Wilton or Lesley Sharp for Elisabeth.
Sherwood has screwed most of that.
Will be interesting how Spielberg casts it and whether bigger names are needed but it is such a British made for tv thing, not sure big screen suits?
Bigger names, Helen Mirren as Elisabeth, Judi Dench as Joyce, Art Malik as Ibrahim, Tom Wilkinson as Ron, Kim Bosnia good call for older Bogdan and Michaela Corn as Donna.

BeenThereBoughtTheTeeShirt · 30/06/2022 21:59

Kim Bodnia
Michaela Coel
Anyone know how to get rid of autocorrect on a kindle?

I'm half way through and have been for about 6 months. I used to devour books in 24 hours and just have to really push myself with this one!

the80sweregreat · 30/06/2022 22:14

It is an odd little book : I had to start again with it before I could get into it properly on holiday. It's not that easy to follow at times.
I thought it would be more ' lighthearted' but it's not really. A few laughs, but not that many

BeenThereBoughtTheTeeShirt · 30/06/2022 22:26

Allison Janey, Melissa Mccarthy, Jeff Bridges, Ben Kingsley
(American remake)

I would have loved June Whitfield as Joyce. Fiona Shaw for Elizabeth.

My mum and I were discussing this last week and thought the same about June Whitfield.

As much as I love Lesley Manville (she’s great in Magpie Murders), she’s too young!

jollygreenpea · 30/06/2022 22:35

Please not Helen Mirren, I'm a bit fed up of her, she's a very good actor but is every where.

CandyLeBonBon · 30/06/2022 23:30

I just find it a bit sad and depressing really.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 08/04/2023 18:19

I’m listening to these at the moment & two of my thoughts are:

Elizabeth really takes the piss where Bogdan’s concerned, even if he doesn’t seem to mind.

No way would Elizabeth say ‘gender’ when she means sex. She’s far too no-nonsense & intelligent.
