Really exciting question here: double glazing

Caminante · 28/06/2022 18:45

Is there any funding for it these days?

I know in the past there have been grants and schemes.

I'm on a fairly modest salary in London and haven't a hope in hell of ever being able to afford to update my windows. What do other people do?

Just for further info, I have single glazing on about half of the windows. Some of the frames are really rotten looking. They definitely need replacing but how?

Do people take out loans?

The green deal was supposed to tackle these issues but was an awful scheme and bombed

You'll just have to pay to replace your windows

Yeah that's what I was afraid of.
Oh well, will have to keep the ones I've got!

I've been quoted £2400 for five windows to be replaced. Not a bad quote I don't think

Thank you, that's really helpful! It's so hard even to get a rough idea of the cost without actually getting a quote. This gives me an indication at least.

Caminante · 30/06/2022 16:08

I need a big front window too, possibly porch? Big bedroom window and then 3 small windows.

the Green homes grant is available through your
local authority if your income is below £30000 a year. They will not replace double glazing but do replace single glazing. The offer also includes insulation and solar panels

Find a local company who has been around for a while. We used a company that made their own windows so cut out the middle man but I am not in London or anywhere down south.

I firstly looked at websites for supply only double glazing to get an idea of cost and then the local supplier was only around £50 more per window so we knew it was a good deal. We did save up for them but this was a couple of years ago before everything went up in price.

You can use a disposable email, again a quick google brings up temporary email generators and so then you don't get pestered with a load of emails from the companies.

@Caminante three of ours have three openings if that gives you a rough idea of size.

Thank you so much for this. I might just about qualify or if not it's a near miss. I'm going to apply just in case.
