Have I made a massive mistake for putting in integrated appliances!

The kitchen has been ordered and will be coming on Friday. It has an integrated washing machine and a dryer and dishwasher. The fridge is freestanding.

I showed the plan to my friend and she instantly was aghast that I had the washer and dryer were integrated citing costly repairs and that the washing machine will start vibrating down the line and damage the surrounding units.

A quick search on Mumsnet - looks like most ppl are against integrated!

I'm not sure if it's too late to change. I have already bought the appliances separately.

Will I regret it or worrying unnecessarily? Is it pretty simple to change if I needed to down the line?

Really annoyed at myself that I didn't research this properly!

I hate integrated appliances because the choice is very limited and when they break down it is more complicated to resolve/replace.

They give a better look though, so I suppose it's just personal preference.

When we refitted our kitchen a couple of years ago we regretted not having integrated units as part of the refit.

I bought new appliances and doors and fitted them myself.

As long as fitted properly to instructions, then no reason for damage.

I love my integrated, the only huge regret we made was an integrated fridge freezer which is much smaller volume wise than our old freestanding one. We had to buy a huge chest freezer for our garage. I have had no problems with integrated dishwasher/dryer/washing machine at all

Dishwasher fine fridge freezer fine do not get the integrated washer an dryer ! Each model and make do not have the same hinges in the same place so if you go to change unless you have a spare door you cannot change the appliance with the old door ! As the old holes are usually in the place slightly off where the new ones go plus they are a lot more expensive for a basic model we took ours out when moving into a nearly new build and just cut the board along the bottom and took the door off .

We’ve had integrated washer/dryer and dishwasher since kitchen put in 15 years ago. No problem at all - machines can still be pulled out for repair, it’s just the doors which are the problem if you need whole unit replaced. Recently replaced washing machine, bought another integrated machine and builder attached the door so all sorted.

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 28/06/2022 16:25

I didn't choose to have integrated appliances but the house we bought last year had a newly fitted kitchen with them and so far it has been a bit of a pita because I want a bigger washing machine however there isn't as much choice with integrated machines. That said it looks so much better with them integrated.

Rafta · 28/06/2022 17:55

Okay. I feel a little reading this.

I'll see how it goes. Hopefully I won't regret it and hear my friend say I told you so!

We have had no issues with our integrated washing machine or dishwasher. We have replaced the washing machine without any issue.

Tumble dryer has not faired so well and the current one is not integrated. Doesn’t bother us though as it’s tucked out of the way and hard to see. We are on our 3rd dryer though with no more than average use and we found the right sized integrated ones very hard to get.

I've had my integrated dishwasher for over 15 years. It's moved house with us (buyers knew we were taking it!), and been totally fine.
I think DW work best as integrated as they're the same internally as a freestanding one, it's just a case of screwing a door on.

WM and TD I've only ever had freestanding, but although there's less choice, there's still plenty of options.

Our FF is integrated, which we did because we're all open plan and I wanted a nice look. But PPs are right - the capacity is way less, so you've made the right decision to go freestanding on that one.

Palavah · 28/06/2022 18:34

My integrated washer-dryer lasted 10 years (tenants for 4, me for 6)

redwaterbottle · 28/06/2022 18:39

We have some integrated appliances (not washing machine or tumble dryer as in a different room) and had no issues. I don't really like the look of the kitchen when appliances are not integrated, though fridge/ freezers are ok.

ExtremelyDedicated · 28/06/2022 18:42

We opted for freestanding FF and washing machine for the reasons above but integrated dishwasher as there were just as many choices and the capacity was the same etc. I don’t like the look of an all-integrated kitchen, I find them very sterile looking and plain, so a mixture suits us.

myyellowcar · 28/06/2022 18:44

No issues with integrated appliances. Even when they needed repair or replacement they are so common it wasn’t a big deal.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/06/2022 18:48

I've always had the dishwasher integrated and never had trouble because of it. In my last home the washing machine was integrated and also didn't cause any problems. In my current house the washing machine and dryer aren't integrated because I have a utility room so they aren't visible.

The downside of integrated as others have said is narrower choice and generally more expensive. Also in the last home the whole cabinet door had to be open when the washing machine door was open, so I used to just open it up on the way to bed and close it when I got up in the morning (I like the washing machine to dry out completely to keep mould at bay).

Littlemissprosecco · 28/06/2022 18:53

It’s fine , all our appliances are integrated, no problems at all in 12 years

Hallyup89 · 28/06/2022 19:00

We bought a house with integrated appliances. The washing machine needed replacing and when we tried to refit the door, it had obviously been done before and it just wouldn't go back on properly. Even when we got it to look vaguely ok, the spin of the washing machine knocked it off again. We ended up removing the door completely. I'd definitely get freestanding next time.

JuneJubilee · 28/06/2022 19:07

I prefer freestanding FF because if the capacity & because it can be difficult to get the same ratio next time (though my Dad fixed theirs by braving the door tigether and only attached to the fridge, which was fine as you don't open the freezer that often!

WM can be a bit more problematic if you want a bigger machine & the leaving the door open thing, but if the WM has to go in the kitchen integrated looks better I think.

DW no problem at all!!

havent had a TD in years & never integrated as it was in a separate utility room.

it wasn't very nice of your friend to say that at the 11th hour!

try not to stress about it.

my friends had the bloke out again today fir the millionth time for her freestanding DW. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

TheOriginalPhantomflanflinger · 28/06/2022 19:10

Integrated appliances every time

Lavendersquare · 28/06/2022 19:11

We have an integrated fridge and dishwasher (freestanding washer and dryer are in the utility) and haven't had any issues at all.

I think integrated just looks so much neater I hate seeing a white washing machine or dishwasher in the middle of a kitchen. There's also no cleaning behind them either 😃

Oldraver · 28/06/2022 19:42

We retro fitted an integrated dishwasher a couple of years ago after having a freestanding one in the (600mm) space. The only difference is obviously the door, and the integrated one is screwed to the sides of the ajacent cupboards so actually less likely to vibrate off

TheDogsMother · 28/06/2022 20:05

We have integrated everything and I love the clean lines of it. With a previous integrated kitchen we had a washing machine die and I was able to get another integrated unit to fit. If the appliances are of reasonable quality I really wouldn't worry too much.

reluctantbrit · 28/06/2022 20:23

We always had integrated and I prefer the look, especially with a small kitchen as it looks neater and less busy with lots of different doors.

We never had any issues in the 4 kitchen we went through. Only issue was the integrated microwave as it is smaller than a freestanding one but still ok.

Unless I have a huge laundry room I will always get integrated appliances.
