Hand hold please, DH has MRI today and I'm in bits.

DH has an MRI this morning and I can't be with him. He's had memory issues and extreme difficulty concentrating for over nine months now and they are hoping to rule out early onset dementia. I'm so scared. He is only 40 Sad. I have extreme anxiety also and doing a shit job being there for him because I'm so consumed by my own fear.

Sending lots of love. It must be awful being in limbo. I guess they start with the worst case scenario and go from there? Have they talked about other possibilities? I hope someone comes along soon with more knowledge than me but I’m here x

Fraaahnces · 28/06/2022 08:49

You must be terrified… Also overwhelmed. I fear that I am clutching at straws for you and that other investigations have taken place already, but has he been tested for infection - also urinary tract infection (which probably won’t show in a blood test, and can be almost symptom-free in men.)? UTI’s can cause delirium in most often in elderly people, but it’s not unfeasible to think it could affect younger ones too.

Herejustforthisone · 28/06/2022 08:51

It’s so horrible, OP. I’m sorry. But know this, not knowing is often worse than knowing what you’re dealing with. So whatever happens today, you will almost certainly know more about what will happen, what can be done, and what life will be like going forward. Knowledge can be a sort of salve on its own.

Good luck to your husband.

Thanks everyone, I have managed to calm down a bit now. Does anyone have any knowledge of how long the results will take? The leaflet he got was pretty vague about it. Is it possible that he would be kept in if they see anything major/given the results the same day? The waiting is going to be completely agonising.

They have said it could be functional cognitive disorder also, and did ask if he had had Covid.

My dh had a mri last year following what they thought was a stroke. The consultant viewed his results that day and phoned at 6pmish and then he got a letter a few days later.

Hope your dh gets his as quickly 💐

HollowTalk · 28/06/2022 09:43

Wishing you both the very best of luck for today. 💐

Lacedwithgrace · 28/06/2022 09:44

If they find something glaringly obvious they may call you today or tomorrow. As it's not an emergency as such (though obviously very important) they may take a little longer to get back to you. The waiting is so difficult, but at least you know you'll get some answers. Thinking of you both x

Amid · 28/06/2022 09:53

Hand hold OP ! I get its scary as I've been in this position myself.

If they find anything they may contact him by phone. Otherwise it could be a few weeks.

MrJi · 28/06/2022 09:56

Did he have Covid ?
I hope you get some answers soon OP. It must be very worrying not knowing what the reason is or how he can be helped.

Beebatron · 28/06/2022 09:59

We think we had Covid in March 2020 but that was before testing, though very likely as I was working in elderly care at the time. Then we all had it again at Easter.

I’m in the same boat but it’s my mum (same diagnosis - either early onset dementia or functional) . Getting her scan results at 4.30pm today, she ended up needing a PET scan after an MRI showed vague changes or something but nothing conclusive - they said they couldn’t be completely sure if what they saw was due to age, or dementia, or prior head injuries . They said results today will determine if it’s dementia or not .

It did take a while for us to get mum’s initial MRI results - about 3 weeks, although I think consultant was on AL and they said there was still a covid backlog too - once those results were in though everything else was pretty fast moving (ie further scans and appointments with specialists) .

Hand hold from me Flowers❤️ xx

LetMeGoogleThat · 28/06/2022 10:50

Aww, its a worrying time 💐 I've had more MRIs & CTs this year than I had planned after I was diagnosed with a brain tumour in January.

But, be prepared for nothing today as the results won't be shared with you until they have been seen by your consultant. Don't try to second guess the looks on the faces of the team in the booth (done that) and plan to do something nice afterwards x

CountessOfSponheim · 28/06/2022 10:57

If there's evidence of a past stroke he's likely to be phoned later today or possibly tomorrow -- they'd want to get him on meds to prevent another one ASAP and then there would be a lot of appointments scheduled in over the next few weeks.

Fraaahnces · 28/06/2022 12:40

He’s not diabetic, is he? They’re now linking T2 diabetes with types of dementia/Alzheimer’s and are considering calling it T3 diabetes.

Beebatron · 28/06/2022 21:23

Well after working myself up all morning his scan had to be rearranged for tomorrow. No he isn't diabetic as far as we are aware, he's had quite a few blood tests etc recently and an ecg which all came back fine.
The waiting really is the worst part and DH is so relaxed about it all, feel horrible that I'm in such a state. I've loved him since I was a teenager and it's our ninth wedding anniversary this week, it's utterly terrifying to think something could be seriously wrong.

Thanks so much for checking in! DH had his scan two days ago and the Dr/Nurse who did the scan said it may be a few weeks before we get results. So more waiting now, which is so hard.

Hello OP, sending you a handhold.

I don't know what other tests have been done so I don't want to downplay, but seems to me there are many issues that could lead to the symptoms you describe.

I myself have Adhd which has taken a massive downturn with the stress of life over the last few years. I have memory and concentration issues with it. Is it possible it could be a nuerodiversity or a mental health issue?

They are trying to 'rule out' early onset dementia. Hold on to that.

Amid · 02/07/2022 11:18

I do hope the results are positive news OP !

Do let us know.

Thank you. I'm trying to take comfort in the fact that we haven't heard anything yet. No news is good news (or that's what I'm telling myself!)
