Asthma, cant breathe tonight

MyLifeNow20 · 27/06/2022 22:47

I would say I have mild asthma. The past half hour I feel like I cant catch my breath, my nose is blocked, ive had 4 puffs of blue inhaler but still feel the same.

I have only been diagnosed 2 years ago and very rarely feel like this.

Im a single mum to 2. Shall I take more blue and just go to bed? Its making me panic

Panic makes it worse - hands on tummy , feel how it moves as you breathe

I wouldn't want to lie down until it settles down

Are there triggers around - close windows if pollen for example , plug cut flowers out

I think you can take more blue - but if it doesn't settle I'd phone 111

DrMadelineMaxwell · 27/06/2022 22:52

Do you have any antihistamines? You can take more blueinhaler if you are still tight chested, but if you are also stuffy it could be allergy triggered and an anti histamine might help, I take one nightly for that reason.

onlywhenidream · 27/06/2022 22:52

You might just have a cold of course - blocked nose

You can take more blue inhaler. Up to ten puffs in one go and can repeat 10 Min later. If it hasn't settled by then, get yourself seen properly. Asthma can be fatal. And take the anti histamine as well.

Asthmatic here. You need to go to A&E. Your inhaler is not working. Are you on a daily inhaler too?

Don’t they recommend you take 10 puffs before heading to A&E?

id try and relax OP, easier said than done but the panic is likely not helping you.

Jewel1968 · 27/06/2022 23:06

The panic definitely makes it worse. Take blue inhaler (up to 10 puffs) antihistamines and whatever helps you relax. I find swimming really helpful as it forces me to exhale and inhale in a regular way.

Lynseylou1 · 27/06/2022 23:08

Do you have hay-fever that may have kicked your asthma off? Try taking an antihistamine to see if that helps. If you still can't breathe and your reliever inhaler isn't helping you will need to go hospital for a nebuliser and steroids to get it under control.

SlowHorses · 27/06/2022 23:11

Sounds hayfever triggered. Take more blue as needed for a few more puffs. Day to day are you also taking a brown inhaler?

Yes but four puffs should start to see some difference. I would go. It sounds like unmanaged asthma so an asthma plan would be a good thing to do.

MyLifeNow20 · 27/06/2022 23:24

Ive had 7 puffs of blue now and feeling slightly better.
I think I also have hayfever which has triggered it tonight, any recommendations of a good antihistamine?
I have a brown inhlaer but must admit im not brilliant at taking it, think I need to see asthma nurse again

Ok. Finish your ten puffs. If still wheezing you are going to have to go to hospital so maybe flag to somebody you will need support with kids. You have to take your daily inhaler religiously, it will mostly prevent your blue inhaler being used in a crisis. Take brown inhaler as instructed- vvv importnt. It takes three days to kick in. Have you been shown inhaler technique? You also need to learn unpanicked breathing. Im not joking when I say uncontrolled asthma is fatal. My friend died exactly as you describe, could not get air. Dont be her when you have the drugs to make it better.

ThisisMax · 27/06/2022 23:31

Go get rast/ prick tests to identify allergens and then decide on antihistimine.

justasking111 · 27/06/2022 23:31

Run a hot shower and wash your hair and to remove pollen.
If you've taken bed linen off the washing line tumble it for a few minutes especially pillow cases.
The steam from shower should help.
As will antihistamines.
Ring GP tomorrow get a preventer, learn to use a flow meter to monitor you and ask for a spacer

justasking111 · 27/06/2022 23:33

Use inhaler morning and night before you brush your teeth it's automatic then you don't forget

SlowHorses · 27/06/2022 23:43

What @justasking111 said as this v much sounds hayfever triggered. You HAVE to take the brown inhaler x 2 daily/as prescribed. Non-negotiable.

Removing pollen may be a good idea. However, maybe careful with the shower. Steam is one of my major triggers.

Grumpusaurus · 28/06/2022 04:01

As someone else mentioned, you have to take the brown spray religiously every single day! It acts as a long-term preventer inhaler to stop you from becoming wheezy. I have quite severe asthma which is currently worse than usual. I am on a combination preventer inhaler, tablets etc but currently I am still extremely wheezy: Things that make it a bit more bearable is having on a strong fan, humidifier, and strong coffee:
