Ds has just broken down and admitted to me he doesn’t feel like he has done very well at uni first year. Can anyone advise what happens next if he hasn’t? Thank you.

Depends on what he means and what regs are in place.

Does he think he’s going to be allowed to continue. Normally you get a resit.

Pikafuckingwho · 27/06/2022 21:20

He doesn’t know he finds out in the next week or so. He has received a blanket email reminding him that he should look out for his results.
He has had a wobble and said I’m worried I’m going to fail. And then burst into tears. I’ve asked him if he has received poor feedback he says no it’s been mainly positive. So I’m not sure if something else has happened.

in some universities, your first year does not count towards your final degree. so if you fail something, you might be told to resit or you might just progress to year 2 with a low mark. but only the grades you get in yr 2 and yr3 will contribute to your final degree grade. Year 1 is a chance for students to settle in and get used to the different style of learning at uni.

Was about to say the same as @parietal , ie, the first year doesn’t always count towards the main result, and you just have to pass the year.

Pikafuckingwho · 27/06/2022 21:30

I’ve read the email and it sounds quite positive ie

Depending on your academic performance in 2021/22, the email will EITHER confirm that you may proceed to your second year of studies (unconditionally or with conditions) OR exactly what you need to do during the summer recess (or further in the academic year 2022/23).

then it goes onto say

First, to those of you whose results suggest they need to do a bit more work to progress, please do not lose heart. Maintain your focus and make use of whatever affordances the University can offer you (summer resubmissions, repeating etc).

so it definitely doesn’t say you will be thrown on the street. So I guess that is a positive? Kind of?

That sounds like the kind of bog standard email that universities send out to their students. DD had such an email, yet passed her first year with an average score of 82%.

I hope he gets the results he wanted.

Right now we get to the truth. He has been struggling and not handed two pieces of work in.

In that case, he needs to speak to his tutor as soon as possible. He may be able to get an extended deadline for the work and help on the area he’s been struggling with.
