Ryanair baggage question

Birkenshock · 27/06/2022 12:31

So with Ryanair you essentially have two categories of passenger

  1. check in luggage of up to 20kg, can only bring v small bag onto plane that fits under seat (no use of overhead lockers)

  2. can bring one 10kg bag in overhead locker as well as under seat bag.

So - I'm flying alone with 3 kids under 7 and had booked a 20kg check in bag. Except I now can't be bothered with the faff of checking luggage in and waiting around for it, so I want to avoid this. If I bring a 10kg bag with me instead that can fit in the overhead lockers, will I be charged extra when I get to the gate if they realise this and insist I have to check it in? Or will the fact I have already paid for a 20kg bag to be checked in cover the fact that I have a 10kg bag that I didn't check in?

Is this clear and does anyone know?!

I wouldn't expect it to be an issue given you'd have essentially paid for more. I think the only time it becomes an issue is if they can't fit on all the bags not checked in. I'm not sure how much anyone would actually notice at the gate when boarding.

Yodaisawally · 27/06/2022 12:43

Ryanair - it will be an issue.

They will say it's due to space constraints.

inappropriateraspberry · 27/06/2022 12:45

It depends if there's room for it. I'd contact Ryanair and check. They may not be able to take it as they would be allowing x amount in hold and x amount in lockers.
I'd go for hold luggage as you can take more, particularly with children. Do they have a hand luggage allowance too?

You've paid for a check in bag so it will have to be checked in. They are really stringent with this and it's printed on your boarding card whether you're allowed a bag on board or not.

Clymene · 27/06/2022 12:49

They'll make you check it

AnyFucker · 27/06/2022 12:50

You can bring a 10kg bag instead of a 20 kg one if you wish but you will have to check it into the hold

Trixiefirecracker · 27/06/2022 12:57

you will need to change your baggage allowance, which will essentially mean paying again I guess. They need to know how much weight is on the plane, where it’s located and the room it will take up. You can’t just decide to bring it on the plane.

Lightningrain · 27/06/2022 13:01

No, they won’t let you take hand luggage instead as they check everyone’s boarding pass as you board to make sure you’ve got a hand luggage allowance.

They won’t care that you’ve paid for a hold bag and not checked one in (if they can even verify that you haven’t actually checked a bag in from the gate).

You’ll probably have to go online/ring them and pay separately for hand luggage but I don’t expect they’ll refund you for the hold bag (worth a try though!).

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 27/06/2022 13:12

You have to pay to have a 10kg bag on the plane. If memory serves they check everyone's boarding passes and take the 10kg bags and check them of people who havnt paid- I can't understand why you'd go for this option it's like all the inconvenience of checked and on board and none of the convenience of either.

Birkenshock · 27/06/2022 14:20

Sorry - I should have been clearer about my issue.

I'm actually ok if I get to the gate and they say "no, you have to check this in", and they put it into the hold. As long as I don't have to pay more.

Because the bag drop doesn't open until 2 hours before the flight boards, so if I have to check the bag in via bag drop, I have less than 2 hours to get to the gate by myself with 3 small kids.

Whereas if I can skip bag drop, I can get to the airport like 3 hours early with my 10kg bag, have loads of time to get the kids through security and get to the gate, and then if they say "no, you need to check this", I'm fine with that because I'll have avoided the bag drop queues. I just won't have the money to pay for it to be checked in at the gate. Does that make sense?!

Why do you need more than 2 hours?
Doing what you have suggested is kind of entitled. Why should you be able to just give your bag to someone at the gate or as you board the plane, when everyone else checks it in properly. Just check it in, 2 hours is plenty of time to get through security.

AnyFucker · 27/06/2022 18:20

Doing that is out of order, tbh. If everyone did that there would be even more chaos than there is now.

And people wonder why they get “treated badly” by the budget airlines. Just follow the bloody rules like the rest of us have to <sheesh>

gabagoulghost · 27/06/2022 18:23

You can't do that op.

Stillfunny · 27/06/2022 18:28

No , can't do that. If you have indicated it upon booking , you can be charged at the gate. Maybe if kids had backpacks , they would be allowed provided they will fit under seat.
Only way to do it is to change booking but you will have to pay again .

Clymene · 27/06/2022 18:33

I can't believe you think it's going to be easier to spend 3 hours trailing around an airport with 3 little kids and a bag than 2 and no bag.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 27/06/2022 18:38

No, of course you can't do that. Imagine the chaos if everyone just tried to skip the proper check in procedures. Very selfish

There are actually 4 options with Ryanair.

Small hand luggage only ( back pack, must fit under seat) free/included.

10kg over head bag and small bag under seat and priority £20 each way ( per person)

10kg over head bag only £35 each way per person

20kg checked in bag £60 each way per bag.

Ryanair are MEGA strict at the check in and at the gate. You can't just wing it, they will literally tell you that you need to pay the actual in air port costs. This is exactly the scenario that bags them all the extra money... Pepe think they will just risk it, nobody will check. My brother in law had to pay £120 for one flight as he turned up with a case that was over weight and an extra carry on bag. I've even seen Ryanair staff refusing to let People swap to empty seats as they haven't paid the upgrade fee etc. money is their god.

Birkenshock · 27/06/2022 20:49

Gahhhhh, ok ok. I flew Ryanair in May (with no kids), the bag drop desk opened 2 hours before the flight, then it took 45 mins to do the bag drop because the queues were massive, and over 2.5hours to get through security because the queues were down to the car park! I figured if I could skip the bag drop bit, I can get to the airport early enough to allow more than 2 hours to get through security, which seems to be needed lately! But if I have to bag drop I have less than 2 hours. I'll have to have a ponder to see if I can make this work some other way then!

I’ve recently flew with Ryanair and I didn’t have to que to drop back they had a self check in thing for baggage

JimJamJolly · 27/06/2022 21:03

Flying with Ryanair tomorrow from London Stansted and have had an email to say bag drop is now opening 3 hours before flight as they are aware of delays going through security. So there is a chance the time might change for you.
