Hi there,

Quick question please 🙏.

How do I correctly write the the sentence below?

Darcy has two daughters; Debbie who lives in Singapore and Donna who lives in Salisbury.

Darcy has two daughters -Debbie who lives in Singapore and Donna who lives in Salisbury.

Darcy has two daughters: Debbie who lives in Singapore and Donna who lives in Salisbury.

or if all completely wrong I would be grateful for some help!

I would do the third one with a colon.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 27/06/2022 08:46

Your first example.

MindPalace · 27/06/2022 08:48

I would just use a comma. Just to be confusing!

Or a hyphen or colon. Def not the semi colon.

underneaththeash · 27/06/2022 08:49

The first. It’s not a colon as the two sentences are linked.

ginslinger · 27/06/2022 08:50

semi-colon or comma

ShadowsShadowsShadows · 27/06/2022 08:51

I would also just use a comma.

TeenPlusCat · 27/06/2022 08:51

I'd use the :
I might also put an Oxford comma after Singapore.

I wouldn't use a ; as the second part is directly related to the first.

However my interest is Maths not English, so I may well be incorrect.

Darcy has two daughters. Debbie, who lives in Singapore, and Donna, who lives in Salisbury.

StrawberryPot · 27/06/2022 08:54

The third option (with a colon) or a dash.

Definitely not a semicolon.

Whilst it might be tempting to add commas in the second part, there's no need

bettyswaps1 · 27/06/2022 09:02

Oh no, no unanimous answer then!

My grammar is getting worse, not better as I age!

I’d also just use a comma after daughters. Although I hate the Oxford comma with a passion!

bettyswaps1 · 27/06/2022 09:09

Okay thanks everyone. Comma it is.

I would use a colon. This link below is quite helpful.

PragmaticWench · 27/06/2022 09:15

I'd use a comma as the second sentence is an explanation of the first but isn't a complete sentence in it's own right, so a semi colon wouldn't be appropriate.
