What magazines are aimed at 40+

I fancy buying a real magazine, something I haven’t done for many many years. The last one I bought regularly was More in 1997 (for position of the fortnight!).

Are any magazines aimed at the 40 something woman? Or are magazines not really done anymore? A brief look in Sainsburys this morning seemed to be all very specialist, fishing/cars/crafts etc

What are you interested in?

Rifling · 27/06/2022 08:33

I randomly bought The Lady last year and it was quite interesting!

Platinum magazine is aimed at that age group, I read one copy when it first came out and wasn't as impressed as I'd hoped to be - that might be down to the internet providing so much information but I used to love reading magazines!

VanCleefArpels · 27/06/2022 08:39

Platinum and Woman and Home specifically aim at our age group. Good Housekeeping is ok. I’d really recommend the Readly App if you are into reading mags as it is such good value - £8 odd for unlimited magazines (best read on a tablet)

MissyB1 · 27/06/2022 08:45

I have a subscrition for Woman and Home, its like a little treat when it comes through the letter box.
I also like Good Housekeeping. I do like Prima but it's not got much in and I think it's poor value.

ImAvingOops · 27/06/2022 08:46

I'd say Good Housekeeping. Don't be put off by the awful name. I think W&H is aimed more at people heading towards retirement.
Occasionally I still buy Red and Elle but I've cancelled all my subscriptions because magazines just aren't what they used to be. I miss the thick, glossy ones of my youth. They seem to be going through the motions these days with a lot of repeated content across different ones.

Hoolahulahoop · 27/06/2022 08:48

I bought Cosmopolitan and it's still sitting there unread (just bought on a whim)
I love Interior Magazines though !

BarbaraofSeville · 27/06/2022 08:49

What about something you're interested in rather than a 'woman' magazine, which tend to be more like books of adverts?

I've occasionally bought the Sunday Times travel magazine if it's had features about places I'm interested in.

Good Housekeeping can be interesting sometimes and seems not to be that much about housekeeping in the traditional sense.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 27/06/2022 10:04

Prima magazine is great

SheWoreYellow · 27/06/2022 10:09

Woman and home and Good housekeeping seem to be presuming you have adult children and are going through the menopause. There is a gap for the 40 yr olds. (Not to say no 40 yr olds are menopausal, but most aren’t.)
Does Red still exist?

thebabessavedme · 27/06/2022 10:09

nearly 60 here, I buy Vogue, Harpers and World of Interiors (they dont have Lorriane Kelly on every other issue Grin

SheWoreYellow · 27/06/2022 10:09

If you tend towards self helpy stuff, Psychologies is good.

Xanthe68 · 27/06/2022 10:12

If you just want a "women's mag", maybe try Red. I think some of the suggestions here are aimed at slightly older women- I'm 50 and definitely think of mags like Prima as being too old for me.

But you might have more luck if you buy something you're interested in rather than just something aimed at women, as they are a bit samey.

Moaningturtle1 · 27/06/2022 10:50

Thanks for the suggestions! Just looking for something generic with a wide range of topics from fashion and beauty, human interest, travel, parenting teens etc. But I feel like I’m slipping through a gap in the market.

Also, why are they the price of a paperback novel now?!

I used to like GH but I think their articles have really dumbed down in the last few years.

DSGR · 27/06/2022 11:13

I like Good Housekeeping and Woman and Home

Join the library and you get free access to the Pressreader app. Thousands of magazines and newspapers available from all over the world. You can even bookmark and save favourite articles. I've saved a fortune!

ImAvingOops · 27/06/2022 13:22

It's probably more economical to get a multipack - there are various mixes available, so you could try a couple and it is slightly cheaper than buying 3 separately. I baulk at paying a fiver for a thin magazine

MuddlerInLaw · 27/06/2022 13:36

Hmm … Grin

I’ve read Vogue all my life since my early teens. Don’t think it’s age specific. Much nicer in print than on screen.

The Gentlewoman magazine might suit! Very cool, beautifully presented, high quality fashion and interviews with people worth interviewing. Even with 99% of my leisure reading being online now, I have been known to buy a print copy at the start of a long train journey. Not aimed at any particular age but I doubt anyone younger than you (or I) would countenance actual paper.

Apart from that I’m mostly reading literary journals online.
