Do I need to 'select my seat' on airplane when I have a 3 year old

We are just booking a holiday and I always usually pay to select our plane seats so we are together but DH just mentioned it's probably a waste of money as surely we will be sat with our 3 year old anyway.

I'd like to save the much needed money but worried we won't be sat together if I leave it to chance.

What if every other passenger decides to pre book seats then there's only odd seats left. Will we be sat separate? Surely they would put us with ds?!

But @Dinoteeth what would you do in the event that you're not seated next to your children? Which can happen if you happen paid.

I don't actually know because it is unlikely to ever happen, airlines reserves seats so parents can be put with kids.
Just the same as they won't allow kids in the emergency exit rows or if they are empty they people into them.

Depends a lot on the airline. Budget and holiday airlines may or may not seat you together.
With BA you can pay for seat selection when you book your flight or you can choose your seats for free when online check-in opens, 24 hours before the flight.

I log in to my account the moment online check-in opens and have never had problems getting the seats I want for DH and I.
(They have always allocated us seats together anyway but it’s easy to change them if we want. )
Full disclosure — we don’t fly at the beginning of school holidays or at half term.

When Me and my Husband flew with our 3 year old I assumed at least one of us would be seated with the wee one but we were all in completely different parts of the plane. This was Jet2. We had to beg other passengers to swap.

I was on a flight recently, mid seat between aisle and window. The air hostess asked if I'd swap seats so someone's child could sit with her mother. So they definitely don't sit parents and children next to each other. And I've read a few threads where parents have been separated.
