Cleaning Spree - Tips needed!

OddSocksandRainbowDocs · 26/06/2022 20:18

Tomorrow, I have a day off that is husband AND child free. I plan on blitzing the house, having a good declutter and clean as I go.

Any tips?! :)

My tip is that before you start on your house you ought to get done practice in, to make sure you’re doing it properly. As it happens, I can help you with that - I am very generously offering you the opportunity to practice your cleaning skills at my house😀

Remove stuff that shouldn't be in the room, then I'd dust from the ceilings down before vacuuming &!

JaneJeffer · 27/06/2022 00:23

My tip is forget the cleaning, put Wimbledon on and relax.

Unless you have a small flat, doing a full declutter and clean in one day seems unrealistic. I would work out which areas most need it plus add a few which will be easy wins with a very noticeable difference once done for motivation purposes (the cupboard under the stairs/Random Crap drawer may be at a crisis point of clutter, but you want to be able to stand back and admire your work at the end of the day too, which a shut drawer or cupboard won't give you). My porch, the downstairs loo, and DD2's room are my easy wins.

After a very long and hectic week, I'm having the same sort of day tomorrow op! I pride myself on being a bit of an expert cleaner and declutterer so my advice would be to:

  1. headphones on. Music on.

  2. carrier bag/bin bag for rubbish

  3. big bag for stuff going to charity

  4. bag for dirty laundry

  5. get all your cleaning gear out, everything you'll need and have it within easy reach so you're not digging around for different stuff every ten minutes.

Best way to blitz a room is to think what cleaning bits you'll need in there then take it in with you including the bag for rubbish and the bag for charity. Start with disposing of any rubbish, then anything that needs donating. Next strip down any fabrics that need washing eg cushion covers and fill bag.
Next dust from ceiling , light fixtures then furniture in that order. Wipe and polish everything next including the window, light switches and door handles: Hoover at the end. And voila you have a perfectly clean room! Use e cloths and a water spray for sparkling streak free mirrors and glass anything. Smile

Don't forget to take a break if you need it and reward yourself at the end of your mission 🥰

You will have less time than you think to blitz so I would set a timer and do 30 minutes per room (a bit like the organised mum method) - in an average 3 bedroom house this will take about 4 hours of constant cleaning!

Plus breaks, lunch, tidying up after lunch, sticking a wash on and you'll be done for the day. 30
minutes per room isn't really sufficient for a deep clean but for a blitz will be great.

Thanks everybody! Little one is dropped off at nursery, I've just enjoyed a HOT cuppa (doesn't happen often!) and a bacon sandwich. I'm aiming to do 30 minutes in each room so wish me luck Grin

Good luck 🍀
I had a day like this yesterday. Cupboards were decluttered (kitchen) and kids wardrobe and doors. School books (all came home and art so I sorted for scrapbooks).

Today I only have to shine mirrors and windows and might sort make up and toiletries.

Luckily, we only live in a very small 2 bedroom house so it's not taking as long as I expected. My motto today is 'If it doesn't have a home, it's going!'

Good for you!! Bet you feel so much better and life is a bit easier.

Also I would invest in a label maker 😂 changed my life. Literally

OddSocksandRainbowDocs · 27/06/2022 14:53

@Hoolahulahoop I may need to invest in one Grin

The one thing I am struggling with his PJs! I just can't decide which ones to get rid of! I have about 10 pairs but my favourite ones are threadbare, have holes in them but they're so bloody comfy! They are going to have to go, aren't they? Sad

Ooh - which one did you get? I keep looking at these, weighing up the pros and cons of each one, then I remain undecided about which one to go for.

Yes, they are. Make space for lovely new ones! You've got this OP 👍

Mine is a really old Brother one. Like maybe 10 years. Use it all the time.

Bunty55 · 28/06/2022 00:41

I used to clean houses so sometimes when I need to get down to cleaning my own place I use strategies to help my mindset.
I pretend I am the cleaner and work fast. Seeing results is helpful. Put the timer on the cooker and allow myself x amount of time for a room.
In the kitchen have a routine such as... empty bins and bleach them before lining them again. Put everything possible out of sight. Wash up or load the dishwasher. Wipe all surfaces down and at the end wash the floor and go off and clean elsewhere.
If you have a clear idea of what you are going to do with an itinerary it is better than blindly cleaning somewhere you will end up cleaning again.
Get a routine.
Write jobs down and do them in order. It is all good and it works.

Very satisfying, op. I love a day like this. Planning on doing one myself soon. 😆 Hope it all went well. To maintain it after, 30 day challenge once or twice a year might be helpful where you de clutter one small thing each day for 30 days. Or every month or so, go round your space and declutter 20 things.
