Would you change jobs for this money?

Job A local so WFH, 1/2 days office and local visits. 35hrs pw. £22.5k.

Job B 23 mile commute. 37hrs pw, will bel able to WFH 3 days but will still need to go on visits in location and can't claim miles until there. £30k. (Would be £28,500 if was 35hrs)

I've worked out petrol based on filling car today is 19p a mile so nearly £9 a day when I go in which with visits will be 3/4 days.

Then I'll need more after school club and some doggy day care if DH has to go into his office which could be £40pw.

Average pay increase after all this will be maybe £200pcm.

Longer commute, less time with kids and dog, less holiday by 3 days, two goes longer a week.

However longer commute means audio book and me time. Careers progression is available and not for current job.

On paper the job roles are the same, local authorities just one pays way better.

Is it worth it?

It wouldn't be worth it for me, just because of the longer commute

emmathedilemma · 26/06/2022 15:40

It would depend how easy the 23 mile commute is I think…..in some places that would take half an hour, in others more than twice that. Career progression might make it worthwhile long term though.

HundredMilesAnHour · 26/06/2022 15:41

I'd do it for the career progression.

Singleandproud · 26/06/2022 15:42

Is it the same pension?

custardbear · 26/06/2022 15:45

For me it would be about career progression and pension, but I've a PhD and am probably 10'yeara from retirement so different things matter for me

Job A.
Easier for home life and possible emergency school collection. (Yes I know this should be shared blah blah).
You mileage rate doesn’t include repairs/replacement car/insurance/servicing, which will increase.
23 miles - what about roadworks/accidents/bad weather and having to be on time for work/school/clubs etc.
Petrol etc costs aren’t going down -
would the other job give regular pay increases?
just a few reasons. …

Is it really 3 days WFH for job B? I've read so many people who have been told one thing for WFH and then the reality is something different.

Career progression will in part depend on who might move on or retire, and you could have a team that are all say only a few years older than you, and opportunities be limited.

I'd want to know more before opting for job B.

I wouldn't do it. I got offered a £12,000 pay rise the other day but the hours were longer and flexibility wasn't there so I declined it.

The commute alone added an extra 10 hours on to my working week.
