What’s your seat of choice on an aeroplane?

I’m not a well seasoned traveler and have begun to fly over the last couple of years after I moved abroad so flying is still novel and I love the window seat to watch out of but I had to fly yesterday and ended up with an aisle seat behind an exit row and now I’m conflicted because yes window seats are fun but an aisle seat near an exit row? Man that makes for some speedy disembarking!

Aisle seat very back row. Speedy get out and no annoying kids kicking the seat behind you

GrandSlamFinalee · 26/06/2022 00:34

Short haul, hand luggage, low cost carrier - window, if it gets allocated

Short haul, hand luggage, flagship airline (with boarding process according to seat letter), must keep suitcase with me - window

Short haul, checked luggage, any airline, must disembark quickly - aisle

Long haul, day flight, must disembark quickly to clear immigration and catch connecting flight - aisle, left hand side of the plane, as far in front as I can afford

Long haul, night flight - window, right hand side, middle of the cabin so less noise from front galley or toilets

I take an odd 50 flights each year. I’ve got this nailed down!

Window when travelling with family, aisle if not. No to first 5th rows.

This. My mil lives in France and we fly over hand luggage only and this is always our preference

leotardrock · 26/06/2022 00:39

I like any aisle seat! Like to pretend I'm just on a train & like getting up being able to get up when I want without moving anyone!

I agree with all of that, but would pay the extra on short haul to sit in the front row (extra legroom and first off the plane).

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 26/06/2022 00:41

Extra leg room. I don't fly unless I can get a bigger space. I don't care about speedy disembarking.

Christinatheastonishing · 26/06/2022 00:42

Window so I can look out/lean on it to snooze. Exit row or bulkhead so nobody can recline their seat onto my knees.

DoItAfraid · 26/06/2022 00:43

Aisle all the way. I do not care at all about looking out the window.

Most of my flights are long haul and I cannot be dealing with the anxiety of waking people up / asking people to move because of my easily irritated bladder.

I haven't flown since covid, but there was a good website where you could look up the plane type, and seat number, and it gave you pros and cons. Such as at the back- people in a queue for the toilet will be loitering near you, this seat has less leg room, this seat doesn't recline fully back etc. When I find the link or name of it, I'll post it.

I used to do a great deal of long haul- 20hrs plus! For short haul, I'm not as bothered, but for long haul, my ideals are:

  • I generally choose over the wings for less turbulence.

  • Ideally within 5 row of an exit (something I'd read about escaping from a plane and chances of survival)

  • I had the very back row once and the seat didn't recline as far, so never again

  • Depending on the seating configuration. If the seats are 3 then 4 then 3, I' choose the centre on the aisle and the one next to it for DH. Yes, there is little view, but on long haul, you are watching TV, reading, travelling at night and hopefully sleeping. It means that we can get up and walk about without disturbing anyone else too.

  • I generally try for the left side of the plane. (If facing forward, towards the cockpit, I mean seating on the left using the left aisle) For some reason, they always attach the stairs or tunnel that side, and the queue to get off generally seems quicker.

The website is Seat Guru. It's very helpful

I don't really understand this one - if you have checked luggage and no connecting flight, then you're at the mercy of how quickly your luggage arrives onto the carousel. Surely disembarking quickly is more useful if you have no checked baggage, so you can be out of the airport more quickly.

The cockpit 😎

First class.

Not that is an option but it is what I would prefer.

Otherwise, it depends on the length of the journey and the

And another vote for www.seatguru.com. It is a very useful website and I love how they colour code the seats.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/06/2022 10:10

Aisle seat anywhere but very front row (can’t put handbag under seat in front, has to go in overhead locker) or very back row (seats don’t always recline.)
I hate having to clamber over anyone asleep to go to the loo, or having to ask them to let me out.
For short haul, pref. near the front (closer to loo and quicker to disembark.)

Dh always wants a window seat, so we often don’t sit together, but that doesn’t bother me.

CMOTDibbler · 26/06/2022 10:20

Long haul, window seat, pref with my right shoulder to the window, at the back of a cabin so I can recline my seat all I like.
Short haul, window seat, as far forward as possible, with the exception of flying into Heathrow if it is a landing path over London day when I will choose a seat not over the wing and with my right shoulder to the window as I love looking out.
I've spent too much time on planes...

FionnulaTheCooler · 26/06/2022 10:24

Anywhere as long as its not too near a toilet, I hate people standing around right beside my seat.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 26/06/2022 10:25

Oh I love the amount of thought gone into this!! I absolutely need to put more thought in…
