Boris building £150,000 tree house for son

I’ve just read that The Prime Minister is planning to build a tree house at Checkers for his son that will cost in excess of £150,000. I’m disgusted. I know there are rich people all over The country who may well have built similar projects for their children and to be honest that’s there business, if they’ve earned the money. But this is the man in charge of the government who are making policies that are causing debt and distress to many of their citizens. Many who are struggling to feed their families and clothe their kids never mind building tree houses for them. I think he should have a little more empathy!

No it’s not an old story. The one he had planned for 2020 was to cost £95,000 and had bullet proof glass but the council wouldn’t grant permission as it could be seen from the street. The is the new proposal!

He really has the most awful sense of what's a normal price- do you remember when he was London mayor that website for the bridge that never happened? I believe they paid £120,000 . My friend has done better websites for 3k-- that's his problem - because he's often using public money he has totally lost perspective of 'the ' ballpark' for tasks.

Bignanny30 · 26/06/2022 11:18

As I said in my original post I have no objection to people who have loads of money spending it any way they like. Isn’t that what we all work for - to get as rich as we can to buy the things we want!? But this is the man in charge of the government who are passing policies that are causing families debt and distress so it’s almost like he’s laughing at them or rubbing their faces in it. Ha ha look what I’ve got! At least wait until he’s no longer prime minister. Finally message to FemmeNatal - don’t make assumptions about my income

My dad made DD1 a play house from 2 old wooden packing cases for her 3rd birthday. He cadged them from a company he used, designed it and made it so it could be flat packed and re-assembled at ours, then 240 miles away. He drove it down, assembled it, nailed roofing felt on then painted it. All it cost was the roofing felt and some paint. He was then a mid-60s retiree. DD1 is now almost 23. The play house has been moved to our current house and is still there. Kids got loads of use from it but it needs an upwards extension now! £150k is ridiculous.

Chequers is an estate that was gifted for use for whoever the current prime minister is for entertaining and as a country residence.
It solved the problem that was created when one of our prime ministers (can’t remember who) was the first not to be landed gentry with their own estate to use for entertaining.

none of our prime ministers should be doing anything to that, which requires planning permission. It’s not yours, it’s not your family home.

it’s the same as me renting, I wouldn’t put up a shed without landlords permission and would be aware I’d have to leave it behind when we move.

Frankly what concerns me more is that he thinks he’s going to be in power long enough to get that much use out of it.

echt · 26/06/2022 14:01

Well, he's been dropping hints about a third term:

Dancingwithhyenas · 26/06/2022 14:04

So I am no Boris fan but it wasn’t going to be funded by the public. It also didn’t happen. So I think it’s a bit of a non story.

midsomermurderess · 26/06/2022 14:04

How long did he see himself having use of the place? (yes, I know it didn’t get the go-ahead). And as for ‘well; it’s his money…’ Christ alive.

QuebecBagnet · 26/06/2022 14:06

Snuffy28 · 25/06/2022 13:12

It's his money, it's up to him what he does with it. Do you want him to give away all his cash and live on £1500 a month? Would you, if you were rich?

But it isn’t, he doesn’t pay for stuff. Like the wallpaper.

he gets people he barely knows to pay for it, then lies about it. These people will be expecting some sort of favour in return, ie getting a govt contract. So ultimately if tax payer money is being spent on more expensive contracts than would otherwise have been the case we are paying for it. Or they’re been let off some tax payment, or getting a favour somewhere. It’s not right.

QuebecBagnet · 26/06/2022 14:08

And for those saying it didn’t happen…..only because he didn’t get permission…. Not sure if that’s planning permission or permission from security services, there are conflicting reports. But if it had been up to him he’d have had it built.

I don’t understand why anyone would build a treehouse of any description for a two year old unless they actually want to spend their time in A &E when the child inevitably falls out of it or off the ladder. I find it hard to believe that even Boris thinks Chequers will be his until his tiny children can use the treehouse . Is he so arrogant that he really thinks he will still be P.M. for many years after the recent by election debacle?

He’s announced he plans to stay as PM for a further two terms, so at least until 2030. Wilf and the other one will have been packed off to Eton long before that.

QuebecBagnet · 26/06/2022 14:11

Please not another 8 years. We ought to have a two term rule.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/06/2022 14:14

More to the point- it's not his house!!!!

Minimalme · 26/06/2022 14:52

Nothing Boris does, or spends, surprises me.

He thinks he can get away with anything. And he apparently can. Just like his buddy Trump.

The lies on the side of the Boris bus which changed the future of our nation should have told voters all they need to know about his moral fibre.

midsomermurderess · 26/06/2022 17:32

And he hasn’t ‘announced his plans’ to stay for 2 more terms. He more floated it, mad and all as it sounds.

That’s not really relevant is it. We have a climbing frame in our rented house garden. Owning a house is not a requirement of having children’s equipment in the garden.

I think Boris is the worst prime minister in living memory, maybe ever, but a fictional tree house not using public money isn’t the reason why.

No, it isn't his money
He was after a freebie from a Tory Donor, no doubt for a place in the House of Lords or some business deal.
It's like the £800 a roll wallpaper. He got a donor to pay for that. And only repaid it when he got found out.

He's a freeloader and a chancer and a liar. And he's not rich. He has 7 or is it 8 children so he takes from anyone he can find.

A climbing frame isn’t a fixed structure though - at £150k, up a tree, this is more like installing a home cinema or garden room when you’ve already been served with an eviction notice. Big, structural changes to the garden that are hard to remove when he is chucked out.

He doesn’t like putting his hand in his own pocket by all accounts and wouldn’t class himself as ‘rich’. www.businessinsider.com/boris-johnson-money-problems-finances-donations-carrie-symonds-2021-5?amp

I am surprised tree house is big news story when BJ literally said yesterday "I won't change my character, there's noting wrong with my character". The guy literally thinks his shit stinking is everyone else's problem, never something he is responsible for.

Just had a chat with DH about how shameless BJ is, whether he even is a Tory (Big Spender guy he is). There's a whole theory about how the Left loses elections but wins the policy battles because (eg) Tories are talking so much about fixing inequalities. However, it turns out that Left policies are better for fixing inequalities, so therefore the Tory Leader is pursuing big Tax big spend policies. Not because he cares about inequality but he recognises a formula to staying in power, sure enough.

Gosh what a weird world we live in.

caringcarer · 26/06/2022 18:44

Up to Boris what he spends his money on. No one else's business.

I rent as well and couldn’t even think of an analogy as bonkers as his playhouse.

How many times does it have to be said? @caringcarer

It. Was. Not. His. Money.

It was cash for favours, a donor paying.

Well he did say that his £250000 income from the Telegraph was “a pittance”. Poor man, it’s hard to afford to holiday with billionaires when you are only a multimillionaire (and I know, he claims he isn’t any more because he has spent it all, but that’s his fault, he’s earned millions over the years).

Changechangychange · 26/06/2022 18:55

Oh sorry, I’m wrong. £250000 was “chicken feed”, his £120000 PM salary was “a pittance”.
