Sorry wasn't sure where to put this.

I use to be fit, sporty even! Running, aerobics etc.
I work ft and 2 young dc so honestly I cant fit that in at the moment. But I'm a teacher so I will be off for the summer soon. I will have my own dc with me but dh wfh some days and I will be able to do a run/ jog fast walk!! Or a online class. I'm determined to get fit but no idea where to start really. Any advice or suggestions? Should I do a few videos first and try to se what I like?

Do the C25K, in 2020 l done this along with ww and the 30 day shred and at the end of the 12 weeks l had lost 3 stone, l was dedicated to it, l am just starting today again as slowly it has crept back on.

I am the second as you work full time, 2 kids and felt l never had time. Honestly it was the best thing l ever done l just wish l had kept with it, l felt so much better mentally as well.

Good luck.

KangarooKenny · 25/06/2022 10:54

Can jump in and ask, when you do the C25K, does the pod cast tell you when you’re half way round and need to head back to the starting point ?

Solongtoshort · 25/06/2022 11:39

@KangarooKenny yes there’s a bell sound, most of the time l was faster coming back so l had to walk up and down my street, l always wondered what my neighbours must of thought of me doing it.

When i restarted I did some online videos first - Yoga with Adriene and Kettlebells with Amy (you'd need to buy a kettlebell, obv!) I also joined some classes and a running club. From those I worked out what motivated me most.

Try lots of different things and then let a routine naturally occur. I recommend a mix of in person and online classes (so if your DC are sick or DH late home and you have to miss the in-person class, you can do something else instead.)

I'd also incorporate fitness with DC - every day go for a swim, a cycle ride a hike or a run. Book kayak or paddleboard sessions or book a tennis court. You could set up circuit training in the garden if they like that sort of thing. Being active as a family as well as having your own routine will help you get fit quicker and stay motivated.

I’d like to try paddle boarding

Fitterbyfifty · 25/06/2022 12:03

I did the C25K and really recommend it. It's funny looking back at how it's changed my perception of distance. Places I thought were far away are now literally a 20 minute run! I think you might struggle if you need to keep the kids with you though.

I wanted to try it for so long but when I did it made me feel so sea sick! 😂

DorotheaFrazil · 25/06/2022 12:10

Yes to C25K.

If you've got an Apple Watch, it's also worth investigating Apple Fitness+. You have to pay for it but I think it's really good. Lots of different types of classes (HIIT, dance, Pilates, yoga etc etc) and different lengths of activity so you can pick something that fits into the time slot you've got available. I haven't got lots of space but just do it in the lounge and move the coffee table each time.

I’m looking to lose 3 stone. I run already and just started CrossFit so I’m starting to see the scales trickle downwards. How much change to your eating habits did you make to have such great results in 12 weeks?

Silverbirch2 · 25/06/2022 13:28

So you think C25k not start on the lower ones? I'll look at them all. Thanks so much, I know after a few weeks I'll be motivated it's just the first week or so!

What do you enjoy OP? Find something you don't hate, it makes it much easier to stick to your routine, even on days when you really don't want to get off the sofa.

There are great weightlifting or pilates videos on youtube, usually 20 - 30 mins each. Combine that with walking or cycling outdoors a few days a week (not much of a hardship in the summer) and you should see some good results.

Solongtoshort · 25/06/2022 15:16

@Arucanafeather l followed weight watchers, l ate 4 time a day and didn’t snack, l stopped drinking alcohol and gave up fizzy drinks. l still only drink water and only drink on special occasions. In work days l am great at work then when l get home l eat crap, which is how it has all come back. Good luck.

Juancornetto · 25/06/2022 15:22

Resistance bands are a great low-cost way of working out at home. And just doing simple things like planking for a set amount every day can make a massive difference. Consistency is the most important thing. It's far better to do 15 minutes a day and keep it up than a couple of full on sessions and then give up. The changes over a couple of months of little and often can be massive

That is so impressive

Solongtoshort · 25/06/2022 16:38

@coodawoodashooda thanks, it would of been more impressive if l had kept it up and carried on losing the rest l had left to lose but life (well mainly Christmas treats) got in the way and l never got back to it. Until my first run in forever this morning.

Silverbirch2 · 25/06/2022 16:42

@Juancornetto urs that's a good way to look at it. Consistency is definitely key! I think I'll start small and try to keep consistent.

Thanks all. I like running - but when I'm fit!

I've just done Couch to 5k and now have really got the running bug. It's like wizardry.

60 days free trial with the peloton app (anyone can use it so no limit, just cancel if you don't want to pay after the trial!)

Download app.Click programmes, then you can see the running outdoors ones (called you can run outdoors), or click classes and you can view outdoor audio run/walks and filter by difficulty, or strength for body weight stuff or yoga programmes, whatever you fancy

I started doing YouTube workouts during lockdown. I do 20 mins per day and have toned up and feel great! I started with Joe Wicks and now do a mix of him, Olivia Lawson, FitbyMik and Oliver Sjostrom. Easy to fit into a busy day and fun.

PriamFarrl · 25/06/2022 17:26

I did C25K a few years ago and loved running but now I do Apple Fitness+.
It’s not cheap, and you need a lot of Apple kit, but I had all the stuff already.
There are 100s of work outs, a lot of which can be done with no equipment. I get up at 6 and do about 10 minutes of core plus 30 minutes of HIIT. Or 10 minutes of core, 20 minutes of dance or Pilates and 10 minutes of HIIT.

emmathedilemma · 25/06/2022 17:34

If you can currently walk a brisk 5k without dying then you can start couch to 5k no problem!

um…fizzy drinks… I definitely drink too much of that. I probably would lose all the weight if I gave up fizzy drinks… I tend to use them as a crutch when stressed.

I would recommend Team Body Project - have a look at their website or on YouTube for some free workouts to try. They have a huge range so there is something for everyone - Pilates, cardio, resistance, boxing etc.
