Fortnite asking for card details of photo ID?!

Hi

My son plays fortnite and a couple of days ago it says it will delete his account if I don’t give my card details or photo ID to proved I am an adult, when I’m setting parental controls. So he can’t play on it at the moment and they will delete his account if I don’t do it. Obviously he is very upset! But I do not want to give them my details.

Does anyone know anything about this? None of his friends are having this. Is there a glitch? Is it safe for me to do it? Googling isn’t helping! Thanks

What platform is he using to play Fortnite and is it a legitimate version of Fortnite?

mnahmnah · 25/06/2022 09:14

@Testingprof

He uses a Nintendo Switch, with the game downloaded through their estore. He’s been playing a few weeks now but this is the first time Epic Games have asked for me to do this

In game did he or you enter an email address for parental controls? If so, you do need to verify your age it’s to comply with laws in the US, which make sense as a child could pretend to be an adult and remove all parental controls.

Yes, we used my email address to confirm I’m an adult giving permission etc. I totally understand the reasons. I just don’t feel safe giving them my card details and wondering if it is safe to do so. Just seems strange when none of his friends have had the same thing

Something about your account triggered them to check. I haven’t had to do the same but epic games is a legitimate website, so your credit card details are as safe there as any other e-retailer.

Chat to Epic Games online. I nearly deleted my son's account by accident, among other things it was asking for stuff like this. The advisor sorted it out quickly without the need for any of this.

VelvetThunder · 25/06/2022 09:46

It does specify that the details won't be held.
It is a legitimate thing and is happening world wide. It has been confirmed multiple times on the fortnite subreddit too.
I did it last night for my son as it's had flagged up as he wanted to link his account for fall guys.

@VelvetThunder

Thanks for the reassurance! I had read all that but there was still a part of me that worried i was being gullible! I’ve done it now and his account is working.

@mnahmnah there is always that worry isn't there. I still always have that little moment too. But have read about it and it has been confirmed to be legit, it's just something they're doing now.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 25/06/2022 11:57

It's to confirm whoch country your account is registered in vs where you are using the account. For example registering an account as a UK account whilst living in Holland so you can access micro transactions/loot boxes which are illegal there.

Hi, we’ve just experienced the same thing after my son downloaded Fall Guys.
May I ask if you verified your identity and if so, has that resolved the problem?
Appreciate it may be too soon to tell if it’s all a clever scam!

Kirst901 · 15/07/2022 00:41

We’ve had the same wondered whether to do it or not! But it appeared for a second time so I went onto epic games web site and spoke to their online chat. I told them I was uncomfortable giving the information but they said it had to be done but information was secure as not even them could see what was inputted. In the end choose the I’d option.
