Cutting sugar from children's diet

... to manage hyperactivity.

Have you done it? Does it work?

Any advice?

Kids are 5 and 4.

The research into groups of children and parties where children are given sugar or not suggests sugar doesn’t make a difference.

What makes you think your children are hyperactive? How much sugar do they have?

My children didn’t have many sweets, but did like the odd can of coke. They became more animated/energetic, but not hyper. To cut out sugar completely will be very hard as it’s in so many foods and would you include natural sugars in fruit.

I think it's hard not to. But you can certainly encourage healthy. My eldest never had anything cut but was exposed to all foods and now eats anything. Will opt for salads, avocados, fish dishes. My youngest is much more fussy! But one thing I would say is to not expose young kids to fizzy drinks until older. My eldest does like them now and will have them in moderation. My youngest at 13 still won't have them and prefers water. Maybe he will later. Perfect teeth though! So I think that's been a good thing.

The sugar rush theory was debunked years ago. Nothing wrong with healthy eating though, your dentist will thank you even if it’s unlikely to do anything for hyperactivity!

That’s probably the caffeine not the sugar.
