Can anyone give advice on cancelling a holiday and claiming a refund, please?

I've already posted on "Legal" but am posting here too for traffic.
DP and I are due to go on a jet2 package holiday in 3 weeks and sadly DP's brother has taken ill suddenly and been diagnosed as terminally ill, just in the last 2 weeks. The holiday was booked in March, with insurance taken at the same time. Does this bit regarding "non travelling relatives" read as, a previously undiagnosed or treated illness will be covered and we could claim a refund? TIA

Can anyone give advice on cancelling a holiday and claiming a refund, please?

You'll be covered as the illness wasn't known about when you booked (I work in insurance). Ring your insurer and talk to their claims team.

I work in travel insurance. I think you'll be fine.

I should add- you might want to check if close relative is defined elsewhere in the policy, but I would expect it to cover brother. You would also want to check the wording under cancellation and curtailment to check their are no issues with that section.

Also remember insurance is only to cover what you have lost, so they will only pay out for this once you have claimed every refund available from flights hotels etc. But their claims team will be able to advise best on your policy.

In addition to the above, it reads as if it's also as long as he hadn't needed treatment or medication in the 90 days before you took out the insurance. I think that might mean treatment or medication for anything, not just for his terminal diagnosis. But I'm sure an expert can confirm.

Justmuddlingalong · 24/06/2022 19:54

Hmm. He does take other medication that's nothing to do with his diagnosis, so I'll phone them and see what they say. Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Sorry, his other medication has been long term, blood pressure etc, but not newly prescribed in the previous 90 days. My head bursting with the news and this is just an additional stress.

You'll need to look at the full picture documents for what their definition of. "Close relative" is - some would definitely cover brother but some restrict to spouse, parents and children. The answer should be in the docs they sent you after you took out the insurance - the full docs rather than the key facts (which js what I think you might have in the screenshot). I'm sorry you're in the situation.

Justmuddlingalong · 24/06/2022 20:14

This is the full wording. So fingers crossed.

Close relative: Mother, father, sister, brother, wife, husband, partner, son,

daughter (including fostered/adopted son or daughter), grandparent, grandchild,

parent-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, step-
parent, step-child, step-brother, step-sister, or legal guardian.

Yes that sounds like youre covered for brother of dh. Just to note the first wording also doesn't actually say what it DOES cover. It only says what it DOESNT cover (ie if you knew about a terminal illness already) so think you probably need to find the words that say a terminal diagnosis of a close relative is covered - and also that it's covered for all of you to cancel not just dh. There might also be more info about what they cover eg if the person is due to only have x months etc. It's best if you can find out as much info from the policy before you get on the phone to them. Hope that helps a bit.
