Hi everyone

my dad has been taken into hospital with ALT levels of over 3000. It was an emergency phone call after blood results taken at the GP. I can’t get anything out of him and he is currently been taken for X-rays and scans.

I have no idea what this means for him.

can anyone help me understand what’s wrong and what can be done. I know it’s not a lot of information.

I have an interview and busy day and trying to relax

hi CoffeeKam, really sorry this happened to your dad. I know it was a while ago now but I currently have elevated ALt levels (99) so not as high but I wondered if you’d mind me asking what happened next and what sort of tests they did? X

I’m not the OP, but have had high liver function tests in the past. Did they also do your AST and GGT? What was the reason for the testing? Do you have pre-existing health issues or concerns?

Liver function tests that are around the 2-4x normal range usually are due to inflammation/fatty liver/generally don’t indicate permanent damage. They are in the 10x normal range when they indicate cirrhosis.

For most people with elevated levels, it’s due to high alcohol intake but could also be caused by other health conditions. An ALT of 99 caused by high alcohol intake, for example, is very reversible if someone stops drinking or significantly limits alcohol consumption. If caused by another health condition, addressing that may also bring it back down, depending on the cause.

I can’t remember exactly what my ALT was, but all my liver function tests were between 100-135 (ALT, AST, GGT). I stopped drinking and they were normal again in 4 weeks. Obviously there are lots of potential causes, including infection, but usually the liver is very resilient and heals itself well when given the chance up to a point.

Hope this is a bit reassuring.

Hi @mindutopia that is reassuring, thank you for taking the time to reply to me. I think it might be down to my diet, I have a high bmi and haven’t been exercising since I’ve had my baby. hoping if it is that then I can bring it back to normal levels through diet and exercise.

to answer your questions, they sent me for tests after I came in complaining about feeling sick constantly, having stomach pains and indigestion and heart burn. I also have a family history of pancreatic cancer so asked then if they could test for that. I’ve attached my full results for the full picture.
