Which charities do you donate to?

I've been thinking about making a monthly donation to an aid organisation (especially because of the awful famine in Somalia) , but not sure which will be best to donate to in terms of how effective my donation will be...considering save the children, international rescue committee or water aid?

Medecins sans frontiers. I know there's a chance that the workers are as dodgy as international workers can be, but I think the money will be used on worthwhile causes. Also, they go where other NGOs fear to tread and tell the world what they have seen. I don't have a lot of money though, so its only rarely that I will donate.

Being as i work for Yorkshire cat rescue that is the one i support

Monthly standing orders for our local hospice and cancer U.K.

Babyroobs · 23/06/2022 23:47

Used to donate to Macmillan but never will support them again after the recent report on their bullying culture, racism and their treatment of disabled and ethnic minority employees. It's quite shocking. I'm going to donate to smaller cancer charities like Maggie's and local hospice instead.

I can never pick just one, I feel too guilty so I try to donate to different places like; The White Helmets, Sea Shepherd, WWF...
My DM regularly donates to water aid.

I have monthly DDs to Oxfam & RNIB.

I know Oxfam have had their recent scandals, but I hate the idea that the innocent beneficiaries lose out because of the actions of some of the staff, so made a conscious decision not to cancel my subscription whilst lots of others were doing so.

RNIB was because of a former colleague whose son was visually impaired and so I witnessed through her the absolutely transformative effects of the work that they do.

My husband does RNLI and Centerpoint which both have resonance for him for different reasons.

JaneJeffer · 24/06/2022 00:04

RNLI

DogInATent · 24/06/2022 00:14

Most frequently, the RNLI.
But I try to spread donations based on local, national and international. RNLI is my national preferred charity, MSF is my preferred international charity.

willowstar · 24/06/2022 04:50

I donate to British Red Cross through my salary. I also have a standing order to RNLI. I keep meaning to add an international one as well, probably the international Red cross.

I have made some adhoc donations recently to Care4Calaise to help fund people's appeals against being deported to Rwanda. I may make that a regular donation.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/06/2022 04:55

Fistula Foundation, Rape Crisis and Against Malaria Foundation. I like to to get a LOT for my money and those have a decent standing, good financial responsibility and change for women and children.

I've worked for non-profits for a lot of my life. The big ones are pretty much all shit.

This. I run a small charity. Other than my own, the charities I support are all small and focused on a single issue that they have expertise in. I’ve also had experience of one very very large charity who received an extraordinary sum from a corporate funder and was rolling up to organisations like mine begging us to spend it (and spend more than we needed) so they could balance their books and look good.
