How do you sell stuff when decluttering?

Have got so much decluttering to do, but don't know what to do with the stuff that I don't want/ need anymore. It would be good to be able to get back some money, but my experiences with Facebook Marketplace have not been great.

Was hoping that NCT sales would come back after the pandemic to clear out baby stuff, but that has not happened where I live.

I considered a yard sale like they have in America, is that a thing here?

If I can't sell on Marketplace I'll just put it on a free stuff page. Or donate to a baby bank or similar.

Gruffling · 23/06/2022 15:05

Thanks, when I say that my experiences with FB Marketplace have not been great, I didn't mean that I couldn't sell things - just that it seems to be full of timewasting people.

I have really good quality things to get rid of, but hardly any time as a working mum.

To be honest, if you're decluttering, it's sometimes better to just overlook the sunk cost fallacy and donate / recycle, rather than sell.

scissorsandsellotape · 23/06/2022 15:23

It's really hard
Facebook marketplace is full of time wasters

ClutterofStarlings · 23/06/2022 15:28

Gumtree is really good in my area. Have a look at similar things so you’re pricing appropriately. I find you get a bit of a feel for a time waster I don’t always go first come first served. I only allow 24hours for someone to confirm/ no show then message the next person. It also has ratings for sellers.

GrumioEstEbrius · 23/06/2022 15:31

Car boot sale?

Diplidocus4 · 23/06/2022 15:32

Vinted is apparently good for clothes and shoes ?

RampantIvy · 23/06/2022 15:34

I use the Facebook local groups rather than Marketplace, and have got rid of loads of stuff that way.

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 23/06/2022 15:35

I use fb marketplace for furniture and large items and vinted for clothes shoes and toys. Absolutely love vinted so much easier than selling on ebay used to be back in the day.

LifeIsARollerCoaster22 · 23/06/2022 15:36

Too. Many time wasters on marketplace and i find i have taken time to photo it. Bag it then no one comes. Then i get annoyed with it being stacked in garage etc. So now i put to charity /bag to school day. Rags for non saleble items.

I agree with this.

in the past we’ve done boot sales, ebay, Facebook. It all takes far too much time and effort for really low return. People want stuff for next to nothing but they want you to answer 22 messages instantly about colour, measurements, collection days, can they change the collection day/time/can someone drop it off…. I just send it straight to the charity shop or advertise for free on Olio these days.

moofolk · 23/06/2022 15:39

Just get rid of it. Take it to a charity shop ASAP

Selling can take ages, take up loads of headspace and not be cost effective in terms of the time put it.

I'm not saying this is you, but it can also be a way for hoarders and procrastinators to put off actually getting rid of stuff....

Tigertigertigertiger · 23/06/2022 15:40

What @moofolk said 😬

Anjo2011 · 23/06/2022 15:42

I just stick in the boot and do a charity shop run the same day. I find selling stuff on line much harder than it used to be

B0ssAssB1tch · 23/06/2022 15:43

I just donate it all now unless it's actually worth a decent amount of money. It's worth it to have it out of there house there and then.

Flowermarket · 23/06/2022 15:47

Marketplace only for really high value/quality items. Otherwise, charity shop or if you can be bothered, a car boot sale. But as a poster above said, usually it's best to overlook the sunk cost and enjoy the freedom that just getting rid of stuff brings.

Nadal · 23/06/2022 15:48

Just give it to a charity shop if you really want to declutter. Gone.

TokyoTen · 23/06/2022 16:18

The only useful app I've found is Ziffit - that's great as you can scan and ship with zero hassle and they pay you! However, facebook marketplace, ebay, vinted - are in my opinion full of would-be scammers and time wasters. I've even stopped using freecycle sites were you give stuff away because honestly people were so grabby and cheeky. I actually had a woman turn up on my door step and give me a massive sob story and start with crocodile tears and I wouldn't give her a vase that I'd promised to someone else!

I take really good stuff to charity shops or I put it on a table outside on the road with a note saying "Free - please leave the table". It soon goes! Dump what doesn't.

orbitalcrisis · 23/06/2022 16:22

I've been to garage sales, our equivalent of yard sales. I would think it's so much easier than packing it all up and taking it to a bootfair, and it's free! Just watch out for people nosing around to see what is in the house and where your security is, etc.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 23/06/2022 16:25

I just donate it all now. Five or six years ago you could flog anything on a local Facebook selling page and get a good price now it’s just not worth the bother.

I feel better for it being out the house rather than sitting around waiting to see if it sells

Yodaisawally · 23/06/2022 16:28

Donate it, selling is a faff and the time v income isn't worth it

MrsMontyD · 01/08/2022 13:11

I'm decluttering, in anticipation of moving in the next six months (I'm buying with DP so moving two houses into one) I've struggled to give things away on marketplace. It took three people arranging a time to collect a small electrical item for it to eventually get collected and that was free.

I've got things that I should really sell and not donate but I'm not convinced it's worth the hassle, the cost of postage and packing for eBay, and the time needed I find wipes out the profit.

The main thing for me is I don't want stuff hanging around, I need to declutter, clean and pack as much as possible, quickly (we're renting storage) because DP needs to move in with us as soon as his house completes

I've got some art, limited edition prints not originals, any advice on selling them other than eBay would be appreciated, I've sold art on frames with glass and sent it successfully by courier before.

CPEBatch · 01/08/2022 14:10

Those that only sell high value items - what’s your cut off point? £50? £100?

Londono · 01/08/2022 14:16

It is going to sound trite but the feeling of having space and a declutter is priceless so I also just get stuff out the house as quickly as possible. Hand me downs to people I know, charity shop, school for items I think will be used there (mostly crafty stuff) and I also put stuff out the front of the house marked FREE as do a lot of people in our village and invariably that goes before the end of the day. We have a clothes bank in the village so stained/well worn items go straight there (always a job for the DC to pedal up there) with better quality things being passed along.

Only if something was worth over £20 for an individual item would I think about selling it and even then only if I knew it would move quickly. Although I'm getting more strapped for cash so I might have to revisit this policy.

Pinkbananas01 · 01/08/2022 14:28

Local Facebook groups - e8ther sell or barter ones. Attract less weirdos than gum tree or marketplace & policed by local admins who remove any time wasters from the groups.
