DS is vomiting, can he still sit exam tomorrow?

He's not been able to keep anything down today, but feels OK (not 100% but good enough) in-between if he's nil by mouth. Assuming he feels a bit better in the morning, what would you do?

Will he be allowed in to sit his final gcse exam tomorrow? Or should I call him in sick? If he goes in would you email the school as a heads up?

Any other time and I would of course keep him off but this is his gcses. He gets extra time so is in a smaller room anyway.

Send him, but call ahead and see if they can isolate him.

Pinklimey · 22/06/2022 21:04

has he been drinking? Its really important that he is not dehydrated.

rnsaslkih · 22/06/2022 21:05

Agree, definitely send him, ask for him to sit it in isolation. The school will likely prefer him to sit it like this, rather than to try and deal with the fallout if he doesn't.

I'll call the school as early as possible tomorrow.

He's been sipping water but if he drinks too much then it's coming back up.

School will want you to get him in if at all possible. Call ahead in the morning to pre-warn them.

JanglyBeads · 22/06/2022 22:08

In one sense there's no consequence if he goes in and spreads it to others because it's the last day of exams!

But of course others may be medically vulnerable or whatever.

Hercisback · 22/06/2022 22:09

It's not the last day for all exams, there are some on Friday.

Speak to school. You can apply for special consideration if the student has medical proof. Even if they sit the exam.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/06/2022 22:10

I would keep him off. If he goes in and he feels I’ll, then he’ll underperform.

Is is Physics. He’s sat one exam, they can get his grade off that.

Speaking as a secondary teacher of 27 years ( left last year)

Bunnyfuller · 22/06/2022 22:10

In-exam-home.

it’s the last exam I believe?

Shouldhavedoneitsooner · 22/06/2022 22:10

if you have an email address, I would email so that staff can get sorted as soon as they get it. If you phone, it might take a while for the information to get to the person that needs it. The school examinations officer will be able ti sort the arrangements. Do try to get him some rehydration salt/ sugar or he will find it very hard to have the energy to sit the exam.

LifeIsARollerCoaster22 · 22/06/2022 22:12

Yes they'll isolate him. Ds school had 3 kids with covid go for gcses.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/06/2022 22:16

I agree the school can invigilate his exam in a separate room.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 22/06/2022 22:22

Yes he can. I did my chemistry A LEVEL with gastroenteritis. I was in a separate room... with a bucket. And permission to use the toilet.

It wasn't fun.

Dancingwithhyenas · 22/06/2022 22:23

I wouldn’t. He likely won’t do very well whilst feeling so unwell. Ring the school and ask for advice and what evidence they need if he has to miss the exam.

He’ll need an invigilator - so isolate him from other students but who cares what he passes to the invigilator! That seems to be the general message on this thread 🙁

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 22/06/2022 22:28

Definitely not the last day of exams! Dd has one on Friday.

I think there's history on Monday pm too

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 22/06/2022 22:37

I'd email the head of year who will grab the EO early doors ... they'll be checking papers from 7.30am

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 22/06/2022 22:38

Agree there is still an invigilator to consider in an isolated room

stillvicarinatutu · 22/06/2022 22:39

Would you want to sit an exam whilst chucking up and feeling sick ? I'm gobsmacked at the people saying send him . The poor little bugger .

You do know exams can be re sat ?

Mariposista · 22/06/2022 22:40

Poor lad - doing exams is hard enough as it is, but with an upset stomach too. Tell the school, he may be able to do them in a quiet room or the sick bay with a teacher looking out for him. Hope it goes well.

99victoria · 22/06/2022 22:40

Yes, tomorrow is definitely not the last exam, we have 120 students sitting history on Monday afternoon!

OutDamnedSpot · 22/06/2022 22:44

Think very carefully before sending him in. Try to speak to the examinations officer first thing. He might be able to get a (better) mark based on papers he has already sat rather than doing less well than expected on this one.

LifeIsARollerCoaster22 · 22/06/2022 22:44

Our school specifically said they can go in with covid / illness. And be isolated so an invigilator must be prepared surely.

JanglyBeads · 22/06/2022 22:51

Apologies, guess last exam date differs by exam boards.
