Home town going downhill

I have lived in the same town since the 1970s, but have really noticed a change in the last five or six years.

Basically, I live in a medium-sized market town about 60 miles out of London. Since the early 2000s, the population has massively increased. In other words, it's now a market town with the population of a small city. The town itself is ringed by horrible new housing estates with hundreds of awful rabbit hutch 'new builds' jammed together. The roads have become utterly hellish as well, and all you hear morning and night are modified engines screeching up and down. Basically, there are too many people squeezed into what used to be a sleepy market town.

But it's also the people themselves. Apparently, there is some kind of deal/policy to move 'problem families' out of London and onto a couple of these new estates. I went into town today and felt really uncomfortable. In the middle of the high street, a BMW had parked, engine running, on a double yellow line. Drill music was blaring out and four young guys were sitting in it, obviously waiting for someone. As I passed, the driver leaned out and said "what da fuck you lookin at?" It really shook me. This was the middle of the day! Everywhere I went there seemed to be groups of young guys wandering about, trousers half way down their legs. There have also been several stabbings recently (none fatal, thankfully, but I guess it's only a matter of time). It used to be a relatively quiet, relatively pleasant town. I now hate the place. That's the last time I'll be going in for a while, that's for sure.

Guildford?
Thats changed beyond all recognition in recent years

ElEmEnOhPee · 22/06/2022 22:13

Sounds like the town I live in (but I'm miles away so not the same place)! It's gone to shite the past few years, used to be a relatively safe place to live and now crime is through the roof but it's the type of crime that has changed too. People are more dangerous and lacking in boundaries including the teenagers and preteens.

Apparently, there is some kind of deal/policy to move 'problem families' out of London and onto a couple of these new estates.

I've heard our local council has been paid to house problem families from elsewhere and it's been going on years allegedly.

StridTheKiller · 22/06/2022 22:15

Kettering?

Assanctamonioysastheycome · 22/06/2022 22:17

Could be any northern milltown outside manchester tbh...

lljkk · 22/06/2022 22:18

Come on OP, tell us where.
For 30 years London has shipped old people out to us in rural Norfolk.
It's like Cockney central.

SharpLily · 22/06/2022 22:19

I'm guessing Sandy.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 22/06/2022 22:23

@NippyWoowoo
We have long suspected that Londoners , on benefits, are being moved out of London's social housing stock as the properties are worth far more than housing benefits.

Chunks of housing have been bought by various london boroughs in recent months.

My source... a borough council member.

AuntyPonsonby · 22/06/2022 22:26

Is it Winchester?

APurpleSquirrel · 22/06/2022 22:29

AuntyPonsonby · 22/06/2022 22:26

Is it Winchester?

Winchester is a city?

LauraNicolaides · 22/06/2022 22:29

It's obviously Witney in Oxfordshire.

foxlover47 · 22/06/2022 22:37

@SharpLily I was going to say Sandy , Potton or Biggleswade

Wbeezer · 22/06/2022 22:41

My very small town is being ruined too, by rich people moving in! Enormous executive homes being built but no affordable homes or bungalows for old people. The streets are clogged with Chelsea tractors badly parked by parents dropping kids off at the independent school, the pub has been renovated and looks like a naff winebar.practical shops replaced by a gallery and gifts shops and everyone is too busy and important to help organise community events or volunteer at clubs. Several people I know of have bought houses in the town near the school for weekday use and return home at the weekend, it's just greedy!
Our local county town is going the way of the town in the OPs post though, its sad when the local history Facebook page highlights this by showing old photos better days.

Blossomandbee · 22/06/2022 22:56

Sounds like my town in the midlands. Curious to know where it is now, although I think it describes a lot of towns these days.

EmmaH2022 · 22/06/2022 23:39

Isn't this everywhere now?

apart from the super posh places some people have named - I'm not familiar.

I know how you feel op. We've gone from sleepy market town with a real community to somewhere with tattoo parlours, vape shops and nail bars whose staff really worry me.

I moved here from the market town I grew up in. I guess the time for me to move again, further from London, is approaching. Just trying to raise Ds somewhere safe. 🙁

Oh no not a vape shop my goodness

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 23/06/2022 00:11

I guess Bedford. Come on OP, spill the beans!

VioletCharlotte · 23/06/2022 07:17

NellesVilla · 22/06/2022 20:42

Right, have crossed Maidstone and Colchester off the future flat search list.

@VioletCharlotte , I thought Basingstoke was ok? I stayed there last year (admittedly on the outskirts) and found it to be fine. Good centre with decent shopping centre, places to eat and that museum (Milestones, iirc?).

Yes it's funny, people who visit or move here always say that whereas people who have lived here forever say how awful it is!

theyoungishman · 23/06/2022 22:19

Is it Banbury OP???

CauldronBubble · 23/06/2022 22:26

Must be Bedford - so much new housing. Which we need but I wish they built beautiful gentle density: pretty streets, shops, playgrounds. Places where you can build communities not just live.

Copasetic · 23/06/2022 22:26

Swindon really has gone downhill but it’s not close enough to London to fit the description.

FreyaStorm · 24/06/2022 13:09

Reading? 😂

60 miles outside London? Yes it is, almost. M4 junction 14 is about 65 miles from Heathrow.

StewedFruit · 24/06/2022 23:08

Bicester...
