Most disappointing band/musician seen live

I am starting this on the back of another thread about best live performances. How about bands/performers you loved and thought were going to be great live, only to be disappointed for one reason or another?

I will start:

Neil Young, Royal Albert Hall 2003. I love his music, absolute soundtrack of my later years at university, but this concert was unbelievable in its shitness. Half of it was some unlistenable concept album. Never felt the same about him after that.

Van Morrison, some concert at a stately home type of place, maybe fifteen years ago? (Have blocked out the details). The booze completely ran out before we got to the bar for the first time (and no, we weren't late, he hadnt even come on stage yet). I guess that wasn't Morrison's fault directly but you would think he would employ/contract people to make sure this doesn't happen. DH and I soberly listened to two songs then shared a look and left to find a pub.

Nina Simone, probably also Royal Albert Hall, some time in the 1990s. Sorry, I know she is dead now, and was a legend, but when you sit right over to one side of the stage, practically in the wings, for the whole show, completely hidden by the piano so only half the audience can see you, then you are going to pass off even your most ardent fans. I never even caught sight of her.

(Bob Dylan pissed me off at the Brixton Acedemy circa 1990 by never taking his hat off, so I never saw his face, but I forgave him because he is Bob Dylan, and at least I saw the rest of him).

I have had the shittest week and so impulse bought tickets to see Biffy Clyro in November. I’ve never seen them live before but know a fair few songs. I don’t think I’ve seen them mentioned on this thread so please tell me their good live😅

Have to admit it was Architects supporting that sold it for me…

They are brilliant live - never a disappointment. Enjoy!

Paramore. I should have known better. Studio band.

Oh that's really disappointing to hear, I've been a huge fan since I was a teenager. It broke my heart to never see the Warped Tour back then Grin

I had been a fan since the early days too! I went to see them in about 2012 when they had their resurgence. Hayley was brilliant obviously but there was something about the atmosphere, it felt almost as if the music was on a track, I didn't feel it deep down like you do at a good concert. Maybe it's just because I was very far back, who knows! Still enjoy listening to their songs though.

The stranglers at reading rock, either pissed or high . Thin Lizzy though were great

Accidentally watched Evan Dando in the dance tent at Glastonbury 1995 because he overran droning on and on while I - and the rest of the crowd - was waiting for Portishead. People were really pissed off towards the end. I was gutted because I planned to see Portishead then Pulp but the accidental Evan Dando watching meant I didn't get to see Pulp.

When Portishead came on they apologised and said they hadn't been allowed to come on.

Portishead were probably the best gig I've ever seen. I saw Pulp a few years later so all was well.

I was at Glasto 1995 too, the lineup was ridiculously good, it was hard to choose who to see due to clashes. (I felt so sorry for this years festival goers, they dont make Glasto like they used to).

Back to the point I desperately wanted to see Portishead (and missed an amazing gig by the sound of it) but the crowds were so huge we couldn't get near the field!...so we saw Pulp instead.

Brilliant! I expect both were worth the wait. What a year that was.

Beyoncé opening night in Manchester 2003. The show was an hour late starting due to a crew member being injured, the sound was horrific and I was with an ex. My ticket was a freebie but still it was such a terrible show that it put me off her until the 2014 Mrs Carter tour, which was insanely good.

Bastille at Leopallooza - awful singing, so off key it grated.

Swedish house mafia at a European dance festival. They seemed off their faces, kept stopping randomly, no audience engagement. Waste of a headline slot.

Anything at Hyde Park - sound quality is always terrible. Ruins every performance. I refuse to go now.

Lords of the New Church (punk supergroup) on tour in France in the 1980s. Truly awful: off their heads, staggered around a bit, swore a bit, fell over a bit, end of show.

Agree with all the people saying Dylan, Van Morrison and Ryan Adams. All three have produced some fabulous albums, but I found them SO underwhelming live.

And hate to say it, but Stereolab. Albums amazing, but live they looked like bored geography teachers.
